The Position:

The Early Childhood Educator will work in an integrated nursery school setting that serves children 18 months to 5 years and their families. Children will have disabilities that include physical, developmental, communication, and/or autism.

A strong knowledge of child development theory and current practices in curriculum development will enable the Early Childhood Educator to develop, plan and implement group and individual programming through play based opportunities and activities.

Key Responsibilities

The Early Childhood Educator supports the Vision, Mission and values of the organization.

Partners with families through Family Team Goal Planning (FTGP) to ensure that family centred care is reflected in all approaches and methods to thereby suit the individual needs, expectation and wishes of the client and family

Is part of an interdisciplinary team that includes educators, and Therapists/specialists (OT, PT, SLP, CDA, Music Specialist) working collaboratively in all aspects of client centred care

Uses formal and informal assessment tools and keen observation to design individual educational plans (IEP) for clients who have disabilities

Integrates goals of other disciplines into IEPs

Utilizes IEPs in small group and individual program activities

Provides a curriculum driven model to meet the changing needs of the client base

Bases practice on established policies and procedures as per Child Care and Early Years Act and Toronto Operating Criteria and Holland Bloorview

Communicates in a timely and effective manner with families and team members

Attends and participates in staff meeting, professional development opportunities, improvement initiatives, and supports the maintance of a safe and healthy work environment

Demonstrates creative approach to problem solving and decision making

Play and Learn site from September 2024 - June 2025. Work site may change in future school year as determined by needs of program

10 month position - close for Toronto School Board holidays (2 weeks in Dec, 1 week in March, and Summers)

Qualifications:

Education

A degree and/or diploma in Early Childhood Education

A registered member in good standing of the College of Early Childhood Educators

Minimum of 2 years of experience in the field of Early Childhood Education that includes working with children with special needs

Working knowledge of the Child Care and Early Years Act, The City of Toronto Quality Assessment Criteria, Children's Services Operating Criteria and The College of Early Childhood Education Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice

Excellent written and oral communication skills

Current BCLS Certificate - Basic Rescuer (C)

Physical requirements/demands:

Fast paced lively environment, requiring agility and considerable physical activity including significant walking, bending, lifting, pushing/pulling, and physical interventions to maintain safety, participation and goal obtainment of children within the learning environment

Transitions/transfers/transports children into specialized and non-specialized equipment for indoor and outdoor play

Required to lift/carry children or equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.

Provides care and support for all daily activities and routines of young children, including but not limited to toileting, feeding, dressing and changing

Exposure to childhood illness, bodily fluids and inclement weather

Sensory demands:

Noise generated within a classroom setting.

Sights and smells associated with physical care of children.
