Job Description

The Supplier Quality Engineer position involves functioning as technical liaison between purchasing, engineering, manufacturing, operations and suppliers. Resolves technical & quality issues, implements and monitors advanced quality planning process, and provides technical support for manufacturing process validation and assure accomplishment of the product with the engineering specifications and quality requirements. Applies diversified knowledge of quality engineering principles and practices to produce and or coordinate the solutions to complex problems. Supplier Quality Management. Considerable creativity and initiative is required. Independent judgment is normally required with some direction from the supervisor.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Participate in the sourcing process, selection and evaluation of new potential suppliers as a support function to purchasing to have an approved supplier base

Involved with new business allocation and supplier feasibility analysis

Pre-fill out the feasibility analysis format describing the special characteristics and future quality requirements, including the early production containment

Implement and monitor advanced quality planning process with selected suppliers for new business, be responsible for supplier APQP progress and process until final PPAP approval by engineering within time frame and according to requirement by engineering in coordination with purchasing

Assure supplier’s understanding of product and submission requirements

Review supplier’s manufacturing processes and quality systems

Assure the accomplishment of the product with the drawing tolerances, engineering specifications & quality requirements with selected suppliers

Function as liaison between purchasing, engineering, manufacturing, operations and suppliers to resolve supplier quality & technical issues and to provide technical support

Define the metrics, goals and periodic monitoring of supplier performance, improve quality performance of suppliers by conducting workshops at supplier locations, providing technical assistance in developing a quality system, or other technical support as required

Maintain required documentation and files

Identify part critical characteristics from product design and/or learned lessons and deploy to the supplier the required process controls

Review manufacturing fixtures concept to assure alignment to the GD&T part design

Cost recovery activities by DMR with suppliers

Support incoming material department

Application of Controlled Shipping (CS-I and CS-II) procedures as required

Coordinate quality product audits in incoming inspection to assure accomplishment to the requirements and issue a DMR to the supplier if it applies

Determine cause of supplier quality problems and coordinate/implement effective and timely resolutions through G8D’s problem solving

Accomplishment of the organization quality system requirements management with supply base

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS

Experience in manufacturing, quality, and/or engineering (min 5 years)

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Mechanical or Mechatronic is desirable)

REQUIRED: Minimum 3 years of high-pressure aluminum die casting experience

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

Hands on experience in manufacturing (with thorough knowledge of manufacturing and assembly plant processes, procedures, facilities and equipment

Knowledge of automotive industry standards and launch procedures (as example; AIAG Core tools [APQP, PPAP, MSA, PFMEA, SPC], TS16949 (Now IATF 16949)

Highly proficient in print reading and interpretation, part measurement/GD&T

Demonstrated thorough knowledge of probability, statistical quality control and techniques (for example DOE, SPC, 7 Quality tools, etc.)

Demonstrated expertise in investigating complex quality problems and applying sound technical problem solving skills (as example; 8D’s, root cause analysis [DD&W, 5Why’s, Fishbone, etc.], etc.)

Overall flexibility due to frequent plan changes driven by unforeseen current quality issue

Experience in with casting (as example; gravity, permanent mold, die cast, investment casting, etc.), forging, machining (turning, milling, spline rolling, drilling, shaping, shaving, boring, honing, grinding, etc.) electric & electronic products, PM process, heat treatment process (as example; carburizing, nitrating, normalizing, isothermal annealing, quench and temper, etc.)

Experience with other transmission components and manufacturing processes

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

25-40% travel and ability to periodically work non-traditional business hours to support local and international suppliers
