Position Announcement WIC Nutritionist Minimum Starting Salary: $43,896/yr ($22.5110/hr) Position Status: Full-Time Work Schedule: Primarily weekdays; Some evenings may be required.

Position Summary Under general supervision, assesses the need for and provides information, counseling, and support to women, infants and children eligible for WIC program services.

Work also involves prescribing special formula for infants and children.

Work is performed according to USDA, Illinois WIC program and McLean County policies and procedures.

Work is reviewed by a WIC Program Supervisor for accuracy, completeness, and adherence to WIC policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Assesses and evaluates nutritional needs for women, infants, and children under five years of age.

Provides appropriate client-led counseling and recommendations based on diet assessments.

Provides breastfeeding counseling and support.

Prescribes and prints appropriate food package and schedules for the next appointment.

Assesses need for special formula for infants and children with nutritional problems.

Assesses need for referrals for social services and makes appropriate referrals.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of the human nutrition and its relationship to health and disease.

Knowledge of social, cultural, and economic problems of individuals and families as they apply to public health nutrition.

Knowledge of educational principle and methods as applied to public health nutrition practices.

Ability to assess the need and provide information, counseling, and support to women, infants, and children.

Ability to present ideas clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing.

Ability to maintain accurate records.

Ability to operate a personal computer.

Ability to communicate in a friendly, pleasant, and courteous manner.

Ability to read, understand, and apply procedure manuals.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, other employees, clients, and the public.

Required Qualifications A Bachelor’s degree in dietetics, nutrition; or a closely related field which includes a minimum of 20 course hours in food and nutrition with experience (2-3 years) in nutrition work in a health setting; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the above noted knowledge, skills and abilities.

Physical Attributes/Demands This position requires activities such as sitting, walking, reaching, standing, bending, stooping, and lifting light to medium objects.

Work Environment The work is performed in an office and clinic environment involves exposure to childhood illnesses.

At times the position may involve contact with distraught or angry individuals.
