EXAMINATION IS ANNOUNCED TO SUPPLEMENT THE EXISTING EMPLOYMENT LIST TO FILL ONE (1) CURRENT WEST JEFFERSON VACANCY IN THE ANIMAL SHELTER.

This employment list will also be used for future EAST AND WEST Jefferson vacancies in this Departments as they occur.The purpose of this position is to enforce animal control laws and ordinances while responding to the needs of animals in the community.

Responds to complaints and collects stray, unwanted, and diseased animals from out-lying areas and transports these animals to one of the Parish's Animal Shelters.

Duties include driving the vehicle used for transportation, unloading animals collected, completing daily log and animal collection reports, operating a two-way radio, and washing and maintaining sanitary conditions of vehicle.

Record keeping includes recording complaints answered, and descriptive information on the animals collected such as breed, sex, color, etc.

Animal Control Officers must handle animals in a humane manner, including vaccinations, scanning for microchips, restraining aggressive animals, and assisting in the euthanasia process.

Animals may include wildlife such as snakes, raccoons, opossums and coyotes, etc.

Officers will be called upon to investigate cases and testify in Court.

Officers must also tactfully deal with the public, read maps and understand written instructions.

Employees may be required to successfully participate in a job-related training course of approximately 240 hours duration during their probationary period.

The employee must be comfortable performing animal retrieval/rescue work around bodies of water and must be willing to participate in Slackwater Animal Rescue Training.

This position is an essential, emergency duty status worker and may not be relieved of duty when the Parish President or his designee recommends a voluntary or mandatory evacuation of Jefferson Parish.

Position requires driving of a Parish vehicle, thus possession of a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record will be given preference.

Possession of a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; PLUS significant experience (paid or volunteer) in caring for and handling of animals in a facility such as animal shelter, veterinary clinic, pet store, research lab, or similar facility.

SUBSTITUTION: Successful completion of college coursework in animal health care, animal behavior or a related field may substitute for the above required experience.

Related education, experience, and/or professional certification(s) above and beyond the minimum qualifications will be required for consideration of an entrance salary above the minimum rate.(ENTRANCE AND PROMOTIONAL) The examination may consist of a written test, a rating of training and experience, an oral panel interview or any combination thereof.

Acceptable applicants will be notified of the time, date, and place of any assembled testing.
