Job Description

SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Associate Director, Counseling and Psychological Services – Bloomfield, the Mental Health Program Specialist assists in the development, implementation, and evaluation of individual and community-level mental health promotion initiatives, including outreach programs, awareness campaigns, services and materials to address suicide prevention, mental health and other health and well-being topics as needed. This is a grant-funded position through an award from the U.S. Department of Education’s Predominantly Black Institutions (PBI) Grant Program. The timeframe for the position is dependent on the length of the grant, which is expected to continue for two years (ending in September 2026).

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Initiate campus and community partnerships to expand the scope and impact of mental health promotion efforts.

Provide mental health promotion workshops, outreach, and trainings that meet the needs of diverse student, staff, and faculty groups.

Represent the Counseling and Psychological Services Department on campus and community coalitions as assigned.

Provide direct outreach to underrepresented student populations and support students through educational programming.

Provide culturally-informed clinical mental health assessment, treatment, crisis intervention, and referrals for student-clients.

Document confidential assessment and treatment notes in an electronic health record.

Attend and contribute to individual supervision meetings and clinical meetings.

Contribute to a weekly departmental staff and group supervision meetings.

Integrate principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion into all initiatives.

Develop and utilize learning outcomes and assessment tools for all initiatives.

Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED:

Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Counseling, Social Work, Health Education or related field.

Demonstrate a commitment to the principles of diversity, inclusion, and equity.

Excellent oral and written communication skills as well as excellent interpersonal skills.

Willing to work as part of a team and possess discretion, sound judgment, and solid decision-making skills.

Willing and able to advocate for students and connect them with appropriate resources, strong sense of commitment, and ethics.

PREFERRED:

Eligible License Mental Health Professionals in the State of NJ

A minimum of one year of experience working with underrepresented populations.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
