Job Purpose:

Leonardo is seeing a junior to mid-level Mechanical Design Engineer. You will be responsible for design and development of new technologies in diode laser systems. Due to the hands-on nature of this position, the majority of work must be performed onsite. Candidates with hands on development experience are highly desired. Most programs require an approximate 50/50 split of office-based design work and cleanroom or laboratory-based development work.

Mechanical Design Engineers are responsible for Mechanical product design, analysis, and development from concept to delivery. This position requires interfacing directly with customers, various internal departments, machine shops, and other vendors.

Duties:

Design and analysis of Mechanical components including, but not limited to:

Mechanical Assemblies

Heatsinks

Heat Exchangers

Dynamic Optical Assemblies

Medical grade assemblies

Military grade assemblies

Automotive grade assemblies

Direct Diode Laser Sources and Systems

Fiber Coupled Laser Systems

Tooling and test system design

Opto-Mechanical Assemblies

Electro-Mechanical Assemblies

Automation components and systems

Build documentation and planning

Solve difficult problems with sound Engineering principles and out of the box thinking.

3D and 2D CAD design and detailing utilizing Solidworks with ANSI Y14.5M standards and GD&T

Analysis of designs using ANSYS and other means to ensure compliance with requirements and sound Engineering practices.

Work directly with Program Managers to maintain project scope and budget.

Work directly with Product Engineers to transfer product to production.

Prepare and present design reviews internally and to externally with clear and effective communication.

Assemble and debug prototypes, working closely with Technicians, Operators, and Engineers of multiple disciplines.

Create and organize design documentation including presentations, BOMs, test criteria, equipment plans, etc.

Hands on development work including, but not limited to:

Solder reflow and hierarchy

Reflow tooling process development

Micro component assembly tooling

Laser test system assembly and operation

Pum systems and chillers for a single and multiple coolant systems

Prototype testing and validation

Opto-mechanical assembly work and testing

Verify prototype component assembly and validate design.

Build and test assembly tooling required for manual and automated assembly of micro components and micro-optics.

Build and verify laser testing equipment to support prototype development and production implementation.

Required Skills/Qualifications:

Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited four-year college or university

Minimum of 2 years experience in a related Engineering field with similar duties

A history of increasing responsibility and independent thinking that includes successful design and implementation of product

Experience with hands on development and prototype builds

Capable of working in a cleanroom environment up to 50% of the time.

Desired Skills/Qualifications:

Solidworks expert, CSWP is a plus

Desire to work on and own products from concept to completion

Familiarity with technologies for manufacturing precision mechanical components made from various metals and ceramics in low to medium volume

Familiarity with semiconductor fab tools and processes

Experience in designing mm to micron level components, assemblies, and tooling

Experience with FEA, particularly ANSYS Mechanical and Fluent

Experience with laser systems, including diode arrays, solid-state, and fiber is preferred

Some knowledge of optics is highly desired

Practical knowledge of ANSI Y14.5-2018

Experience with composite metals used as a thermal interface

Experience with metal additive manufacturing in a production environment

Experience with soldered assemblies and solder hierarchy
