Position Title:High Voltage Electrician

Time Type:Full time

Position Summary and Qualifications:Under supervision, performs journey level electrical maintenance, trouble-shooting, repair and/or renovation of buildings, facilities and equipment in one or more of the following areas: high voltage transmission and distribution systems, relays, motors and controllers, structural wiring systems and fixture of all types. Inspects and reports repair requirements.

This is a unionized position and subject to the University’s Collective Bargaining Agreement with SEIU (BJ32).

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Perform journey level work in any or all of the following categories:

High voltage transmission and distribution system and relays (when not energized) including, but not limited to cables, transformers, switchgears and related components, and splicing cable on systems ranging up 13,200 volts.

Electric motors and motor controllers ranging from fractional horsepower to 500 horsepower.

Electrical systems up to 600 volts including, but not limited to operating, maintaining, troubleshooting problems and installing or modifying wiring, breakers, lighting, outlets and connection of specialty equipment.

Perform preventative and emergency maintenance on equipment up to 13,200 Volts. Exercise appropriate skills to operate breakers and switches to conduct emergency dead bus and as needed live bus transfers of load to minimize power outages.

Operates, maintains, repairs, and installs building electrical systems, components, fixtures and /or equipment up to 600V in accordance with established work order maintenance requests, emergency calls, or specific assignments by supervision. Perform work according to manufacturer’s specifications, departmental guidelines, trade practices, blueprints, shop drawings and schematics.

Inspect buildings, facilities and equipment to ascertain required repairs and makes recommendations to supervisor.

Reports discrepancies or necessary follow-ups to supervisor.

Perform duties and responsibilities with view toward Department goals, energy conservation and support of academic, research and institutional goals.

May be required to assist with maintaining files of utility and building systems diagrams generated from field investigation.

Properly document use of tools, materials, and/or supplies. Assist in maintaining the parts storeroom. Ensure the need for replacement supplies or equipment is identified to the supervisor.

Ensure a safe workplace. Examples of ways to ensure safety include, but are not limited to participating in assigned safety training, conducting pre-evolution briefs, confirming equipment is de-energized, using lock-out /tag-out procedures, and allowing only authorized personnel are in the work zone with proper PPE.

Completes all assigned administrative tasks including, but not limited to updating the work order management system, submitting time cards/ leave requests, and attending assigned training.

Minimum Qualifications

Required

High school diploma

Trade or vocational school graduation, completion of electrician’s apprenticeship or equivalent on-the-job training.

5 years’ experience as an electrician working at a journeyman or equivalent level.

On-the-job or classroom training covering high voltage electrical maintenance.

Skill in interpreting schematic drawings, charts and technical instructions.

Arc flash certified

Preferred

2 years’ experience as a high voltage electrician.

Advanced training or qualifications in a related field (ex. Master Electrician license).

Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours

Must be able to sit, climb ladders, climb stairs and stand for long periods of time;

Ability to lift 25 pounds.

Position is considered critical to campus operations and must report to work when required;

Position may be required to report to work to assist during emergencies (power outages, floods, weather emergencies etc.) and special events.

Compensation for any after hour work would be in accordance with the current CBA.
