G & H Towing Company is one of the oldest and most progressive towing companies on the Texas Gulf Coast operating a fleet of over 40 harbor tugs providing harbor towing services to some of the largest and busiest ports in the United States. JOB SUMMARY
G&H Towing is looking for a new Diesel Mechanic to perform routine maintenance requirements on a fleet of tugs and barges as directed by the Port Engineer. Perform inspections of vessels for repair & maintenance standards and procedures. Perform repair and maintenance work on vessels as required. Work with other company mechanics as needed.
KEY INTERACTIONS (INTERNAL & EXTERNAL)
Companywide staff and managers, G&H executive leadership, senior client leadership, mariners, industry associations, and 3rd party support and consultants. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
“Pull out” boats - “fire-up” and “lay-up” pull-out boats as needed when Vessel Engineer is unavailable
All general Repairs and Maintenance to maintain Tugs “In Service” and operational
Assist Senior. Port Engineer to start up, and dock trial test, after “outside service” repairs are complete, or at S.Y. when Vessel Engineer is unavailable.
Check proper hook-up and rotation of “shore power”
Install, test weekly, and maintain Emergency bilge alarms on all “pull out “boats
Troubleshoot and make repairs for Tug breakdowns (turn wrenches)
Weekly (Friday) fire up of “pull out “boats to run systems and check out tug, Lay-up as before
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
A High school diploma or GED is required; an advanced degree is preferred; extensive experience may be considered in lieu of education
Ability to repair marine equipment on site in adverse conditions and at all hours
Ability to work aboard tugs using winches and mechanical tools
Ability to work in uncomfortable, physically demanding positions, stand on one’s feet for prolonged periods, and lift up to 50 pounds at a time
ASE certification is highly desired
Attention to detail and problem-solving skills
Caterpillar engine experience preferred, especially in 3500 series engines
Excellent interpersonal skills
Experience with mechanics’ hand and power tools, grinders, and forklifts
Familiarity with common mechanic’s tools, service, and diagnostic equipment
First Aid/CPR Trained
Marine engine and gear experience preferred
Proven mechanical acuity and basic math skills
Requires proficiency with computer hardware and software to include Microsoft Office applications, using a computer with a keyboard and mouse, navigation with a web browser, checking and sending email, and use of internet search enginesREQUIRED LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATIONS
Requires an active and valid Texas driver's license
Requires a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Work hours will be assigned based on business needs to include a variety of schedules and hours which may include weekends, holidays, and on-call shifts. By request from the department manager work hours may include irregular hours to assist in completing special tasks or assignments
Out-of-regional travel may be required to attend training, seminars, or work-related events
Work will be performed in the office SPECIAL PROJECTS
Assist the management and or executive team when requested to complete special projects and complete all assignments within a negotiated time frame established by the department manager
