The Staff Accountant ensures the accuracy of the general ledger at Suffolk Credit Union. You will be responsible for posting and reconciling activity while ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting to internal and external contacts.

Responsibilities:

Assists the Credit Union and Accounting Department by ensuring compliance with general accounting principles and adherence to governing rules and regulations by compiling and analyzing data and timely and accurate reporting.

Reviews, reconciles, and posts activity to the general ledger

Prepares daily, monthly, and quarterly reports

Backs up other departmental staff as necessary

Achieves a minimum of "Satisfactory" rating on internal audits and examinations

Accomplishes the credit union's mission by completing relevant duties as needed when requested by management or other staff members

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Post close of business files on a daily basis

Perform A/P checks clearing process on a daily basis

Post and reconcile all Mortgage related activity, including fundings, payoffs, sold loans, interim interest and appraisal fees.

Post consumer and commercial mortgage disbursements

Post and reconcile all Credit Card activity daily

Prepare and post monthly FHLB activity

Prepare and post participation sold remittances

Reconciles and post participation purchased remittances

Post and reconcile monthly accruals related to loans

Perform various reconciliations as part of the month end close process

Reclass charge-offs and recoveries

Prepare various reports including but not limited to fee reversal reports, Delinquency, Charge-off, Recoveries, and Net Charge-off reports, Business Loan reports.

Assists with the preparation of the quarterly 5300 report

Back-up Accounting Staff as necessary

Assists with special projects, as necessary, related to profitability and implementation of new Accounting Standards.

Processes Loan Charge-offs

Back-up on Fixed Asset System

Back-up on posting and reconciling ACH settlement

Essential Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will have a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting. Three (3) years of accounting experience, preferably in general ledger accounting and working for a financial institution.

Knowledge of financial and accounting theory

Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Practices

Fundamental knowledge of the financial industry, particularly with lending / collections

Knowledge of credit union products, services, policies, regulations and procedures

Ability to communicate and relate accounting procedures to non-accounting staff

Strong communication skills

Knowledge of accounting systems, financial analysis software, and electronic delivery systems

Demonstrated computer and software skills including Microsoft Excel

Proficient skill with using and analyzing data with spreadsheet software

Ability to handle multiple and complex deadlines

Ability to express oneself clearly and articulately both orally and in writing

Skill in gathering, analyzing and compiling moderately complex financial and statistical data

Skill with independent problem-solving

Ability to exercise tact and responsibility with handling confidential information

Ability to work with general supervision of daily activities
