JOB SUMMARY:Within the context of a patient and family centred care model and in accordance with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) standards of practice and Codes of Ethics for registered nurses and the established vision and values of the organization, the RN (Pre-Admission) assesses and plans for the successful pre/post-operative nursing care associated with secondary, tertiary and quaternary surgical patients from different surgical services. Working in a fast-paced, outpatient environment, the RN works proactively in assessing complex patient risks and collaborates with Anaesthesiologists and initiates referrals with other interdisciplinary team members in the planning for the day of surgery and the discharge/transition to alternate sites/programs within the designate site. The RN (Pre-Admission) plays a key role in providing education to patients and families in pre/post-operative care to minimize anxiety and maximize their preparation and resources for surgery. Consults and collaborates with team members/other caregivers in the identification and resolution of patient/family care issues. Participates on designated hospital committees/teams and approved research projects, as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS:Education & Experience Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM). Completion of two (2) years’ recent, related experience in acute, tertiary, surgical care environment including demonstrated experience in multiple surgical services.Knowledge & AbilitiesBroad knowledge of nursing theory and practice within a patient/family centered model of care.Broad knowledge of BCCNM’s standards for nursing practice.Demonstrated ability in nursing practice related to assessment and planning of pre/post operative surgical patient care.Demonstrated ability with use of critical thinking skills, fostering the plan and implementation of surgical patient care – setting priorities and integration of available information from several sources to arrive at an accurate baseline clinical picture and make appropriate decisions around patient care. Demonstrated ability to assess patient understanding of care, provide education, and to respond appropriately.Demonstrated ability to adjust to new or unexpected events, problem-solve and set priorities.Demonstrated ability to deal with conflict situations.Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary team.Demonstrated ability to communicate orally and in writing.Demonstrated ability to communicate with, and deal effectively with, patients and their families, coworkers, physicians, other health care staff, and staff of outside agencies.Demonstrated ability to teach patients and their families.Demonstrated ability to provide leadership through initiative and independence.Demonstrated skill in the use of medical equipment and supplies appropriate to the designated clinical area.Demonstrated skill in techniques appropriate to the designated clinical area.Demonstrated skill in CPR techniques.Basic computer literacy to operate a computerized patient care information system.Ability to operate related equipment including applicable software applicationsDemonstrated physical ability to perform the duties of the position.The hours of work including days off and work area may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements and the provision of the Collective Agreement and applicable statutes.
