Salary Range $55-65K

Job Summary

A Wider Circle is looking for a leader to support our Volunteer Department. This individual will ensure optimal functioning of the day-to-day tasks, provide support and supervision to the two-person team, and engage individual and group volunteers in our work. The Volunteer Team works with over 3,000 unique volunteers and more than 250 groups who contribute more than 23,000 hours annually between our Silver Spring, MD, and Southeast DC locations.

Volunteers serve at A Wider Circle Monday through Saturday. The Manager will likely be hired with a Monday through Friday schedule of 8:30 a.m.- 5:30 p.m., with occasional Saturdays needed for special events. If staffing needs to shift in the near future, a candidate may be asked to take a Tuesday through Saturday schedule. After an orientation period, the Manager will be provided one day per week to telecommute.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Provide support and oversight to the Volunteer Team

Provide support and oversight to volunteers

Report regularly to the Chief Program Officer on key performance metrics

Track team members' performance weekly

Provide input to the annual building of the program budget; manage throughout the year.

Essential functions-primary responsibilities

Host individual and group volunteers daily.

Lead Volunteer Team in recruiting new volunteers, including hosting a regular orientation and placement of new volunteers in specific roles after prerequisites are complete

Lead Volunteer Team in hosting volunteer appreciation events, listening sessions, and training

Perform day-to-day tasks including but not limited to responding to volunteer calls and emails, interviewing court-ordered volunteers, meeting with other team members, signing letters with hours verification, checking inventories, and ordering supplies for volunteers.

Engage in public speaking events at our center and the community to attract people to serve at A Wider Circle.

Work with other organization leaders to plan for upcoming volunteer needs and changes.

Manage and optimize the availability of volunteers onsite in Silver Spring to ensure that donations move from the warehouse to the showroom and that excessive donations do not accumulate.

Manage and update the volunteer section of the website and the volunteer management system.

Lead the bi-monthly publication of the volunteer newsletter

Collaborate with the Development team to promote giving and ambassadorship opportunities to volunteers and to support corporate group volunteer events

Stay up to date on the latest trends and changes in the volunteer management field

Required Skills /Abilities

A demonstrated ability to successfully engage and manage staff and volunteers

Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Ability to prioritize tasks/projects to meet deadlines

Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite

Required education and experience

High School Diploma/equivalent

Minimum of 2 years of management experience

Minimum of 5 years of professional experience

Minimum of 2 years of volunteer management experience

Work experience at a non-profit (advocacy, social service, mutual aid, union, etc) organization

Preferred Education and experience

Associates Degree or Bachelors

Experience working with individuals and families living in poverty

Experience working with individuals with differing abilities

Familiarity with volunteer management software (our program is Galaxy Digital)

Work environment

The Volunteer Team Manager will work in a warehouse and office environment.

Physical demands

Capable of moving about the warehouse for multiple hours and being seated at the computer for the remainder of the day. Must be able to withstand various changing weather conditions, as the warehouse is not fully temperature controlled. Lifting of items up to 20 lbs may be needed on occasion.

Travel required

Local travel generally within a 30-minute drive is required on occasion to attend events. About once a quarter, a visit to our Southeast Washington DC office is also expected.
