Description:

The Ohio Program of Intensive English ( OPIE ) is accepting applications for part-time, non-tenure track, non-benefits eligible Instructor positions for the academic year 2024-2025 and Summer 2025. The exact number of Instructors needed is undetermined at this time as it is primarily dependent upon enrollments and changing programmatic needs. When a need arises, the department will select qualified candidates from this pool.

Instructors in OPIE teach non-native English speakers in English as a Second Language for academic and professional purposes.

Duties of Instructors include but are not limited to:

+ Teaching from one to eleven contact hours in OPIE or OPIE Special Programs;

+ Testing and placement duties at end of semester employed;

+ Maintaining three to five office hours per week during times when students are not attending OPIE classes;

+ Using assigned or approved syllabi and assessment materials (when available) and present appropriate lessons for the levels and skills assigned to teach;

+ Planning lessons that are appropriately based on the Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) and make these plans available as requested;

+ Assessing students appropriately based on the SLOs;

+ Posting mid-term and final OPIE “internal” report information (i.e., grades, comments, CR/NC) on Filemaker Pro ( FMP ) prior to team meetings or other deadlines;

+ Posting final University grades (i.e., CR/NC) on university on-line grading system by university deadline;

+ Adhering to appropriate standards of professional attire (business-casual) and demeanor;

+ Fostering a spirit of collegiality (courtesy, helpfulness, and respect) among your students and professional colleagues;

+ Performing administrative or other non-classroom responsibilities agreed upon at the time of hiring;

+ Performing other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

+ M.A. in TESL /Applied Linguistics or related field (e.g., Communication)

+ Demonstrated excellence in teaching ESL (e.g., teaching evaluations)

+ Native-like English language proficiency*

*All Non-Native Speakers must be able to meet the following requirements (or their equivalency on a case-by-case basis):

+ ACTFL OPI or OPIE -Administered AAI : Superior

+ Versant English Test Score: 75

+ On campus TOEFL : 645

+ On campus composition: 6

+ iBT (speaking): 26

+ IELTS 8.0 (speaking band)

Preferred Qualifications:

+ Prior experience in a university intensive English program or teaching non-native speakers of English

+ Prior experience teaching in the Ohio Program of Intensive English or teaching OPIE Special Program students (e.g., Chubu)

+ Ability to teach all levels of learners (elementary to advanced) and all skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing)

+ Excellent interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills including the ability to communicate with diverse constituencies, locally, nationally, and internationally

+ Collaborative approach to working with a diverse group of staff, faculty, and students

+ Ability to use technology (e.g., Microsoft Teams, Zoom) for teaching language
