Overview: Performs a wide variety of statistical, clerical, and administrative support services for the Health Information Management Department coding team. Ensures complete and accurate coding and chart completion to facilitate patient care and promote compliant hospital billing practices.

Duties:

Assists in resolving reimbursement or denial issues with contracted payers through generation and monitoring of medical necessity reports and intra- and interdepartmental communication.

Acts as coding resource for providers, clinical and non-clinical departmental staff, researching coding guidelines as needed.

Performs ad-hoc coding projects/reports as requested.

Assists with health information systems testing and upgrades.

Assigns and correctly sequences codes for first listed/principal and secondary diagnoses/procedures to ensure optimal APC/DRG assignment, following ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT and HCPCS rules and guidelines.

Performs account maintenance, including correction of expiration times, activation of pre-status outpatient accounts and other updates within health information systems, as needed.

Researches uncoded accounts, compiling weekly reports, and communicates/follows up with appropriate personnel.

Demonstrates proficiency in the use of health information systems.

Corresponds with providers via query when questions arise or clarification is needed.

Consults supervisor, team members and appropriate resources to solve coding questions.

Mentors and assists in training/cross training efforts as directed/needed.

Performs other focused reviews as assigned.

Required Experience:

No experience required. Given training and on-the-job training, incumbent should be proficient in the basic aspects of the job within three months of employment date.

Preferred:

Two years outpatient coding experience.

Required Education:

Associate degree in Health Information Technology and certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT). Formal training in ICD-10 coding.

Preferred:

RHIT with CCS credential.
