Company: Our client, one of the largest alternative asset management firms, is looking for a VP-Controller for their real estate team.
Job Overview:
In this role, the Controller will focus on financial reporting and accounting for their publically traded REIT. Responsibilities include oversight of SEC reporting, accounting policy, monthly close, SOX compliance, and external audit processes. The Controller will directly manage a team of three and work closely with colleagues in the FP&A operations and legal teams to drive financial reporting. The Controller will also regularly work with the broader investment, capital markets, and asset management teams to support the team.
Job Description:
Lead the accounting and reporting function for the publically traded REIT, with a focus on SEC reporting, accounting policies, and monthly close processes
Review workpapers, memos, and journal entries prepared by team members; direct focus on complex accounting matters such as CECL reserves, consolidations, and non-US subsidiaries
Directly manage three team members; oversee 6 dedicated offshore team members
Understand new transactions, accounting guidance, and regulations to determine appropriate accounting and disclosure conclusions
Primary contact for internal/external auditors; manage SOX and external audit processes
Partner with the portfolio operations team for loan and financing accounting matters
Oversee treasury function, supported by the treasury and accounts payable teams
Liaise with investment, capital markets, and asset management professionals to facilitate new transactions or accounting-driven analysis
Provide support for public securities offerings and financing transactions
Qualifications:
The successful candidate must have:
BS (or above) in Accounting with a strong academic record; CPA license strongly preferred
10+ years of experience is required; public audit experience is strongly preferred
Prior work experience in the financial services and/or real estate industries is required
Prior work experience with SEC registrants (either audit or accounting) is required
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Strong analytical and quantitative skills, particularly using Excel
