The Packaging engineer is responsible all aspects of new product packaging. This employee will work with design engineers, marketing, packaging manufacturers, purchasing, quality assurance, and distribution.

Responsibilities:

The following duties are considered essential to this position. Other responsibilities may be assigned.

Determine pack configuration and pack style on all new products. Specify board weight, structure, and orientation. Continually improve current products.

Determine and approve size of box and skid configurations for all products.

Coordinate and help execute testing on all packaging. Testing to include drop tests, vibration tests, compression and warehousing tests, and other necessary testing.

Specify the recommended stack height of all products in the warehouse. Work with Distribution and Quality departments to accomplish this.

Recommend pallet or slip-sheet with each product.

Determine and recommend strapping, stretch wrap, or other means to secure product load.

Monitor product in warehouse for best possible arrival to customer. Recommend changes when necessary.

Communicate all product labeling requirements to manufacturing. Ensure compliance.

Research packaging methods and technologies to improve Suncast packaging styles. Strive to reduce cost through better technology. Work with vendors and use their valuable resources in packaging testing and design. Attend trade shows to further understand new packaging opportunities.

Research, document, and continually update any customer-specific distribution, warehousing, and merchandising specifications.

Work with Design Engineering to develop best possible pack through part design evaluation very early in the design process using 3D CAD simulation.

Create drawings for all packaging components to be quoted. Submit quotations using Product Component Request workflow. Request all packaging part numbers for approved new products through workflow system.

Coordinate schedule of all new product packaging items to ensure on-time delivery. Work with engineering, marketing, purchasing and other departments to assure smooth development of all packaging. Chair the Pack Team and/or find other ways to communicate this information.

Support and comply with all Suncast safety policies, quality standards, and housekeeping methods at all times. Suncast policies have been developed to ensure compliance with employee law.

Qualifications:

A bachelor’s degree in packaging design, engineering, marketing, or design with specific course work in paperboard and packaging design desired. Three to five years of experience designing packaging for consumer products with an emphasis on paperboard packaging desired.

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations. Ability to effectively communicate information and respond to questions from managers, engineers, coworkers, and subordinates.

Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations. Ability to apply mathematical operations to tasks such as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

This position requires a high degree of computer literacy. The employee must understand file management methods using MS DOS and Windows NT platforms. Knowledge of TOPPS and JSD software will be required. There must be a strong understanding of three dimensional CAD methods and solid modeling methods. Experience in SolidWorks is a strong plus. This employee must also be thoroughly familiar with spreadsheets and be able to use features such as complex formulas and graphing.
