A member of the patient care team, who, under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurses assists in the provision of physical and emotional care to patients in accordance with hospital policy. Assists the physician and RN during endoscopic procedures, and has the responsibility of cleaning and sterilization of endoscopic equipment.

Qualifications:

EDUCATION

High School graduate or equivalent, Certification of Basic Life Support (BLS), Annual unit specific competencies, 10 (CEUs) annually

EXPERIENCE

Minimum 1 year of patient care or ambulatory clinical support as CNA, PCA, ACA, MA, GI tech or equivalent experience and/or minimum of 1 year of related experience in the GI scope processing.

LICENSURE

Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS)

Successful completion of the SGNA Associate Program within 1 year and Advanced Associates Program within 2 years.

Certified Endoscope Reprocessor (CER) certification, Certified Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) or International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM) or agreeable to obtain one of the above certifications within 2 years from date of hire.

SPECIAL SKILLS

Ability to read, write, and perform basic math. Must be able to read instructional materials and labels.

Ability to participate as a member of the patient care team and take directions.

Demonstrate knowledge of effective skills for communication, listens effectively, and professionally communicates with patients, families and staff.

Ability to work independently, applying knowledge to the entire scope processing procedures.

Able to perform skills required for inventory management, decontamination, and high level disinfecting and maintenance responsibilities.
