Environmental Sustainability Engineer

(Permanent Position)

Background:

The sustainability engineer role within ArcelorMittal’s Global R&D department is critical to maintaining environmental sustainability support for North American customers, not only for those in the construction market segment, where Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) are included in Green Building programs, but also for the automotive segment, which is progressively seeking life cycle inventory (LCI) data to meet carbon reduction targets.

Primary function and responsibilities:

Provide technical support to North American customers for sustainability, EPD and life cycle assessment (LCA) requests across all market segments (both flat and long products)

Contribute technical knowledge to internal AM sustainability initiatives including sustainability councils and corporate decarbonization programs

Represent AM on industry and government sustainability councils, committees and working groups to ensure alignment with corporate policy and business objectives, influence outcomes that are favourable to AM, and provide key feedback to AM Commercial groups

Provide sustainability advice, guidance, educational and training sessions to internal and external stakeholders and mentor staff regarding sustainability principles, practices, and policies

Work with Corporate Affairs and Commercial groups to develop and promote sustainability messages to customers, industry organizations and government entities

Support the development and promotion of the AM XCarb™ products for North American flat rolled and long product customers

Support product & process development by performing eco-design, LCA and/or develop EPDs for new steel products and solutions

Review steel and other construction materials disclosure data to assess life cycle carbon emissions

Support the development of embodied carbon reduction strategies through materials specifications, product substitutions and site specific LCA

Provide project management support and communicate results and deliverables through presentations, reports, webinars and workshops

Undertake research and summarize findings on embodied carbon results and strategies for reducing embodied carbon

Contribute corporate and industry information to various green building rating programs

Assist in completing whole building life cycle analysis in compliance with various industry building standards

Develop a strong interaction with AM R&D centers but also with the academic community in relation to LCA and sustainability

Accountabilities:

Develop and maintain a sound knowledge of current AM products, processes and customer needs

Maintain awareness of regulatory codes, standards, and material specifications to ensure AM product capabilities comply, and influence changes with agencies and customers to maximize AM value in the marketplace

Participate in trade association and regulatory agency activities to ensure steel remains a viable material choice for our customers’ product needs.

Investigate opportunities and identify competitive threats to steel market growth

Facilitate and provide local expertise of the application technology capabilities of Global R&D, and interface with our customers to promote and utilize these technologies to create value for the customer and ArcelorMittal

Determine the value created for assigned projects and communicate to Sales & Marketing to leverage business growth with customers when negotiating commercial contracts

In conjunction with Sales & Marketing, contribute to and execute AM business plans and customer strategies

Build close working relationships with AM customers throughout North America, and identify and lead technical support activities that create value for AM and its customers

Build and grow your level of knowledge of industry developments and trends related to sustainability

Gather and analyze environmental data for internal and external reporting

Collaborate between different AM groups and promote innovation and sustainability culture

Skills:

Strong engineering, environmental, analytical and problem solving skills are required

Strong project management and organizational skills are required

Excellent oral and written communication skills are required

Strong computer proficiency in MS Office, MS Teams and Outlook is required

Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills and a high level of integrity are required

Must be able to exhibit a high level of initiative and ability to work with minimal supervision

Good negotiating skills and presentation skills are required

Ability to work effectively in a team environment is required

Adaptability to change is required

Knowledge of flat rolled and structual steel products and stelmaking processes are an asset

Knowledge of steel manufacturing and its effect on material properties and performance is an asset

Knowledge of manufacturing processes including design, forming (stamping, rollforming, hydroforming, etc.), joining (welding, bonding, etc.) and painting is an asset

Qualifications:

Minimum bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science or related field of study

Minimum five years of relevant environmental sustainability or environmental engineering experience

Masters in Sustainability Management, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Policy, or other Sustainability-focused advanced degree is preferred

Minimum 3 years working experience conducting LCA modeling using GaBi, SimaPro or Open LCA is required

Experience using whole building LCA tools such as Tally, One Click LCA, or Athena is an asset

Understanding foundational concepts of sustainable buildings including energy performance, material selection, and the integrated design process is preferred

Ability to read and understand building drawings and specifications is an asset

Experience with building information modelling and CAD software tools such as Autodesk Revit, Sketchup, AutoCAD and other construction design tools is an asset

Knowledge of Energy Star, LEED, WELL and PassiveHouse certification systems is an asset

LEED AP BD+C accreditation is an asset

Ability to travel to the USA and Europe and eligibility to obtain a USA work visa is required

Hours of Work:

Straight days, Monday to Friday, with extended hours as required due to periods of peak workloads.

Work Environment:

Office environment with occasional plant or laboratory exposure.

Occasional outside processors and customer manufacturing facilities

Frequent travel on personal time is required.
