Academic Dean Specialist Job Description

George Washington Carver Academy, located in Highland Park, Michigan is seeking a dynamic, committed, data driven professional to join our school community. As a Curriculum Specialist you will manage testing and conduct data analysis to manage our Muti-tiered System of Student Supports. You will ensure that teachers use instructional best practices, and that instruction is aligned with the Common Core State Content, Process, and Skills Standards. The ideal candidate has a background in effective teaching and school leadership.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

Student Support

• Develop and manage an effective Multi-tiered System of Supports (MTSS) intervention team, that includes classroom teachers, Special Ed. teachers, Instructional Coaches, Paraprofessionals, Academic Specialists, and school leadership.

• Manage the development of common lesson planning, assessment techniques, and processes for

individualized tiered levels of support throughout all professional learning communities (PLCs).

• Work collaboratively with the MTSS Intervention Team and the School Improvement Team to identify

individual student needs and ensure compliance-related tasks are completed.

• Direct and instruct the Paraprofessional Staff.

• Maintain databases and reports as required.

Testing, Data Collection, and Analysis

• Manage the scheduling and implementation of MAP/NWEA and M-Step testing.

• Facilitate the analysis and utilization of all summative, formative, and common assessment data to improve curriculum and instructional practice.

Implementation of Instructional Best Practices

• Implement daily schedules and a yearlong plan for regular data-driven instruction cycles.

• Monitor and ensure consistent implementation of targeted instructional best practices that improve student performance.

• Collaborate with teachers to analyze and use assessment data to plan, implement, and modify curriculum and instruction to increase student achievement.

• Collaborate with Instructional Coaches to develop coaching plans for teachers that ensure student

improvement.

Curriculum Alignment

• Ensure alignment between GWCA’s implemented, curriculum, and the Common Core State Standards

including content, process and skills standards.

• Develop pacing guides, learning objectives and outcomes, aligned with the Common Core State Content, Process and Skills Standards.

• In collaboration with instructional staff and school administration, manage the acquisition and care of

textbooks, teacher guides and other instructional materials and equipment aligned to the CCSS.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Competent in data analysis and data-driven decision making in instructional planning.

• A strong working knowledge of the Common Core State Standards including both the content standards and the process and skills standards.

• Fluency using digital tools and online assessments in the classroom and remotely.

• Extensive knowledge of the current literature, trends, and evidence-based best teaching practices in the field of education.

• Exceptional written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.

• Ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Experience

• Experience working with at-risk students in an urban school setting.

• 5 or more years of effective teaching experience as evidenced by student assessment data and other

evidence preferred.

• Experience in leadership roles such as program coordination, School Improvement chair, project

coordinator, professional development presenter, teacher coach etc.

• Experience presenting to adult learners.

Qualifications

• 5-10 years of teaching experience required

• Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate

• Administrative Certificate -preferred (or willingness to enter a program within 90 days)

• Bachelor's Degree in Education or Content Area is required

• Master's degree in the field of Education preferred and/or extensive course work in education. Exceptions to Master’s degree attainment can be made for an individual with the right experiences, skills, and mindset.

Compensation and Benefits

• Salary - $62,000 to $74,000 based on experience and qualifications

About Us:

The GoodLife Agency, the lead grant agency, and three (3) local education agencies in Metro Detroit are the recipients of a three (3) year, $7.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Teacher and School Leader (TSL) program.

Eagles Nest Academy, George Washington Carver Academy, and River Rouge School District will use these funds to increase teacher and school leader effectiveness and improve student learning and academic performance in six (6) high-need schools.

The LEAs have received the CARES funding (one-time money) to support school operating budgets without solid plans for how to sustain these initiatives post-pandemic for our high-need schools.
