Job Description:

This 25% effort position will work with Emeritus Professor Michael Cherry in Physics & Astronomy on design of new NASA-funded Advanced Particle-astrophysics Telescope (APT) and development of ADAPT Antarctic balloon prototype, and eventually take over as PI of currently funded APT-ADAPT program.

Responsibilities:

Oversee design of minute-of-arc scale orientation system for high altitude balloon telescope to be flown in Antarctic. System will be based on suite of sun sensors utilizing multiple-pinhole position-sensitive detectors, fiber optic gyroscopes, and an autonomous GNSS-based Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver. Oversee design and implement system to communicate with Iridium satellites to enable prompt transmission of transient gamma-ray burst event data to ground. Develop specialized radiation detector readout software including unification of interfaces for elemental software and data structures; develop database and web portals; design and implement circuitry for readout of low-power, large-scale parallel detector readout systems. Design, implement, and debug software to communicate with Gamma-ray Coordinates Network (GCN). Interface with scientific collaborators on APT/ADAPT experiment, participate in data analysis and writing of scientific papers, supervise students and technical staff, act as Co-Investigator/Principal Investigator on NASA-funded projects. Participate in field campaigns in locations including the US and Antarctica.

Minimum requirements: PhD in experimental astrophysics, high-energy radiation detector development, or related field with 10+ years experience with NASA space-based and/or high-altitude balloon-borne scientific instruments.

Preferred qualifications: Experience with microwave SQUID multiplexing; experience with cryogenic, low noise superconductor, and vacuum systems; experience with X-ray/gamma-ray scintillation detectors and spacecraft instrumentation. Capability to design metal-machining processes including milling, micromillling, wire EDM, and welding/soldering/brazing components. Knowledge of Python to interface detector models and simulation to CAD, ability to apply computer-based decision making to monitored and remote data collection. Knowledgeable in Django web framework with RESTful APIs; MySQL database administration, management, design, and query optimization, JavaScript, React (modern >v16) JS library, and Node.js web framework, HTML and CSS, file and web server NGINX. Industry standard tools including cross-platform (Windows, Mac, Unix) Git, GitHub, IntelliJ IDEs, AI pair programming using GitHub Copilot, and GitHub Actions. Virtual machine and web-deployment

via AWS lightsail.
