Qualifications:
10 years of experience (20+ years preferred) in mechanical engineering practical application experience is required
B.S.M.E. from an accredited engineering school
Applicable experience in electromechanical, optomechanical, and/or mechanism design
Demonstrated knowledge and experience of common machine design elements: gears, bearings, belts, machine screws, chains, cams, linkages, gear motors, servomotors, material selection, etc
Strong knowledge and experience with mechanical design (including Y14.5 GD&T), tolerancing, and analysis
Knowledge and experience with broad project management of complex projects or processes with general oversight
Experience may range from concept development through procurement and design qualification
Mechanical requirements management experience including work with requirements flow down to specifications and interface definition and compliance verification
The ideal candidate will be a recognized specialist in their area of expertise with a high, in-depth level of knowledge and problem-solving skills
This ideal candidate will also have experience or professional exposure to mechanism design, industrial equipment design, rapid prototyping, DFM, and hands-on experience producing front-end engineering designs
Must be able to propose and implement changes for future products
Must have a demonstrated track record in successful design delivery involving conceptual designs
Strong communication skills (verbal and written) for internal and external presentations and reviews
Must be able to legally work in the U.S. (no sponsorships)
Responsibilities:
This role will report directly to the CTO
Work Schedule: Professional work schedule with minimal night/weekend support
Some nights and weekend work may be required
Responsibilities include completing mechanical performance, manufacturing, and reliability assessments, mechanical architecture definition, and technical specification and interface control drawing development with supporting trade studies
CAD experience, especially Solidworks or Inventor, ability to work with complex models required
Clarify vendor proposals
Develop technical bid evaluations
Create technical requisition purchase packages
Execute equipment design reviews
Prepare engineering specifications, data sheets, and inspection and testing plans for required equipment
Review suppliers’ proposals and develop technical evaluations
Review and approve suppliers’ design calculations, fabrication drawings, and quality control documents
Witness testing and pre-ship inspection of critical equipment in the supplier's manufacturing facilities
Develop QA/QC standards for equipment
Monitor mechanical engineering interns and co-ops
Develop life cycle costs for equipment repairs and replacement
Troubleshoot system issues associated with manufacturing processes
Perform engineering calculations to support design work, with knowledge of kinematics, dynamics, stress/strain, power transmission, etc
Trade studies include consideration for the feasibility of design within time and cost constraints
Technical activities include documentation of recommendations for presentation, review, and approval
Activities also include developing design concepts, supporting drawing creation, assigning and evaluating tolerances, and driving drawing releases
Job duties may include leading small cross-functional teams of engineers and designers in accomplishing the above assignments
Responsibilities may include investigating solutions to product or process problems
Communication includes within and outside of own function to gain cooperation on operational processes, practices, and procedures
Preferred Additional Skills:
Experience with flexures, feedback control sensors, torque margin, cable/wire management
Experience with machine instrumentation (proximity sensors, vision sensors, strain gauges, scales, etc.)
Strong analytical skills with emphasis on using and/or directing finite element analysis (FEA) desired (static stress-strain, natural frequency)
