Occupational Summary

The Senior Legal Fellow is a full-time, two-year term position for an early-to-mid career attorney with a minimum of two (2) years of experience as a licensed attorney. The position is ideal for an individual interested in pursuing a career in higher education and/or practicing health law at an educational institution with an academic medical center. A demonstrated interest in the laws and legal issues pertinent to colleges, universities, and/or academic medical centers is required, and prior experience with such laws and issues is preferred. The Senior Legal Fellow will be exposed to many aspects of the Office of Counsel’s work, including but not limited to: athletics, employment, healthcare, litigation, research, privacy and data security, student affairs, and transactions.

Work Performed

Provide proactive assistance, research, and advice on various legal issues such as contracts, dispute resolution, government funding agreements, patient care issues, hospital operations, graduate medical training program matters, regulatory compliance, research misconduct, employment-related issues and proceedings, data security and privacy (including HIPAA), trademark, intellectual property, tax-exempt financing, mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance, and litigation-related matters.

Respond to federal administrative charges, including but not limited to complaints before the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights and the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

Conduct internal investigations under the direction and supervision of the university counsel.

Draft contracts, agreements and other legal documents.

Advise on compensation approaches, employment disputes and proceedings and assist on a broad range of student affairs matters.

Counsel clients regarding federal and state regulations and assist in development of policies for compliance with state and federal law as well as University and Health System policies and regulations.

Conduct legal research on federal and state laws and prepare legal memoranda.

Provide advice and support in management of litigation.

Conduct training on federal and state laws and University and Health System policies.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

JD degree and a valid license to practice law in the U.S.

Experience

Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a licensed attorney practicing in a law firm, in-house legal department, and/or government (including clerkships).

Strong legal research and writing skills.

Work location: Durham, NC
