Summary

Trinity Lutheran School is looking for a part-time principal to oversee the teachers, curriculum, and students. The principal will also be working on marketing and growing the school in conjunction with the Board of Education.

Duties

PRINCIPAL

The principal is the chief educational leader of the school and lends leadership to all educational

agencies of the congregation serving as the resource person. The principal is responsible for

the administration and supervision of the educational program, personnel, the physical plant,

and the finances of the school.

Professional Responsibilities:

1. Has been and is a successful teacher.

2. Continues to advance professionally through reading, conference and study.

3. Has a total parish awareness, showing interest in the total educational program of the

congregation.

4. Is a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Personal Responsibilities:

1. Participates actively in congregational activities, including regular attendance at worship

services and Holy Communion.

2. Participates in community activities and takes an active role whenever possible.

3. Clearly articulates the objectives of the Lutheran School.

4. Sets annual goals for self, identifying priorities within these goals, and implementing them

effectively.

5. Understands and uses democratic leadership abilities.

6. Makes decisions and exercises good judgment.

7. Uses time efficiently, organizes work systematically, and follows through on plans.

8. Has good communication skills, including writing, speaking and listening.

Administrative Responsibilities:

1. Is responsible for implementing policies adopted by the Board and the congregation;

provides leadership and assistance in developing new policies.

2. Develops and carries out a program of continuous evaluation of the school personnel,

teaching and non-teaching.

3. Reports regularly and fully to the Board on all aspects of the school’s operation.

4. Prepares and publishes the school calendar, as approved by the Board.

5. Prepares a budget for the Board’s approval.

6. Prepares the Board’s agenda in consultation with the chairman.

7. Provides data necessary for the Board to perform its tasks effectively.

8. Communicates the decision of the Board to teachers, students, and parents.

9. Attends all congregation and Board meetings.

Administration of the Office:

1. Is responsible for collecting all monies and maintaining accurate financial records.

2. Is responsible for ordering and purchasing all school materials.

3. Keeps essential records in a secure place.

4. Keeps a complete inventory of equipment, books, and materials.

5. Keeps accurate, up-to-date information in all teacher files and student files.

6. Interacts with salespeople, educational personnel of the government and the church, and

the general public.

7. Uses available media for publicity and gives information to the congregation and the

community.

8. Sends school news to parents regularly.

9. Is responsible for all special programs, religious services, projects and extra-curricular

activities of the school, even though he may delegate direction of such activities.

10. Promotes a clear understanding of the school’s distinctive nature, both in the

congregation and the community.

11. Reports regularly to the congregation and the Board of the school’s purpose and work.

12. Implements any plan developed by the Board to recruit students for the school.

13. Promptly prepares reports required by local, state, national, district, and synodical

officials.

14. Is familiar with the state law regarding transportation of private school children, and

keeps the Board informed.

15. Represents the Board and the congregation at all public meetings regarding

transportation that pertains to the school.

Administration of the Facilities:

1. Is responsible for hygienic conditions of the school, (proper seating, heating, ventilation,

cleanliness and sanitation, lighting, etc.

2. Is responsible for safety conditions in the school (fire, hall conditions, classroom

activities, etc.)

3. Is responsible for building and equipment maintenance, recommending to the Board or

the Trustees any repairs, replacements, or additions.

4. Is responsible for optimum development and use of the school plant for purposes of the

total educational program.

Supervision of Staff:

1. Has a leading role in securing qualified personnel for the school.

2. Provides an orientation for all staff members, both teachers and support personnel.

3. Conducts regular meetings of teachers and conducts meetings of the support staff as

needed.

4. Assists teachers in their goal-setting process.

5. Reviews the lesson plans of teachers weekly.

6. Makes evaluative visits to classes regularly and discusses the visit with the teacher as

per evaluation process in the policy manual.

7. Uses teacher evaluation conferences to help teachers establish goals for improvement.

8. Establishes a good atmosphere in the school which is conducive to good

teaching/learning situations by a total commitment to supporting the staff.

9. Helps to create a cooperative spirit among members.

10. Promotes the professional growth of the staff.

11. Supports teachers in the classroom leadership roles.

12. Acknowledges good teacher performance.

13. Represents the needs of the staff before the Board.

14. Schedules professional in-service demonstrations and presentations forn the faculty.

15. Prior to the opening of each school year, conducts orientation and planning sessions for

staff members.

Supervision of Curriculum:

1. Helps teachers plan and execute a quality educational program.

2. Keeps abreast of current educational methods, trends, and materials.

3. Recognizes the professional judgment of teachers in the selection of materials and

teaching methods.

4. Provides for systematic, constructive study of all areas of the curriculum as outlined in

this policy manual.

5. Provides for testing in the areas of achievement and developmental age in grade

placement.

6. Is responsible for curriculum development, revision and improvement as stated in this

policy manual.

Supervision of Children:

1. Is concerned that each class is meeting its objectives.

2. Is concerned that each child is achieving progress at a rate commensurate with the

child’s abilities.

3. Serves and friend and advisor to students.

4. Communicates effectively with students at all levels.

5. Is effective and fair in handling pupil discipline problems.

6. Is responsible for adherence to standards of behavior which have been adopted by the

school.

7. Makes arrangements for the testing of students before they have been accepted into the

school.

8. Contacts outside agencies to provide remedial help for students.

9. Provides for an effective guidance program for students.

10. Is responsible for the admission, transfer, promotion, acceleration, demotion, suspension

or expulsion of students from the school using policies adopted by the Board.

11. Is responsible for playground, corridor, gymnasium, lunchroom and other supervision,

even though he may delegate the actual responsibility.

Requirements

The principal candidate should have experience as a teacher in a classroom and ideally as a principal.
