Job Title: Nurse Practitioner

General Summary of Duties:
University Orthopedics is seeking a full time dynamic, motivated Nurse Practitioner to join the group. This group is a high-volume practice that handles spine, sports, joint and hand cases. The NP will be responsible for the evaluation and nonoperative management of patients with musculoskeletal complaints and acute/chronic conditions.
Locations will be Kettle Point, Newport and Westerly Hospital.
Additionally, serve as a procedure room back and provide professional nursing care to patients pre and post op. Develop and provide direct nursing care and treatment by assessing the patients’ needs, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care.
Essential Job Functions:
NP Duties:
Maintain an independent schedule and evaluate patients independently as well as under the direction of the supervising physicians.
Perform routine outpatient procedures and surgeries
Access, diagnose and treat acute and chronic care patients
Assist physician in examining and diagnosing skeletal and joint problems
Order and interpret test results and recommended treatment of patients
Administer injections as needed when indicated
Provide postoperative patient care
Pre and post procedure follow-up and patient evaluation
Consult for pharmaceutical or interventional treatments
Write scripts and patient education
Evaluate X-ray, CT scan and MRI
Additional duties as assigned by the Manager to meet department needs.
Procedure room back up responsibilities:
Consults and coordinates with physicians to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care
plans
Conducts pre- and post-procedure education
Serves as the communication liaison to family and members of the procedure team
Ensures that correct patient and the correct procedure is being performed
Provides basic, bedside care
Prepares and administers (orally, subcutaneously, through an IV) and records prescribed medications. Reports adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with the policy regarding the administration of medications
Responds to life-saving situations based upon nursing standards and protocol
Records all care information concisely, accurately, and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms
Prepares operating room for patient/procedure
Monitors patients’ physical and emotional well-being throughout the care continuum
Initiates patient education plan, as prescribed by physician. Teaches patients and family members how to manage their post-treatment home care needs, self-administration of medication and rehabilitation
Performs other position-related duties as assigned, depending on assignment setting
Assists in positioning, responding to comfort/safety of patient
Observes, checks and monitors all equipment used during procedure to confirm they are running smoothly
Inventories all items both pre- and post- surgery
Requirements:
Must be licensed as a Nurse Practitioner in State of Rhode Island
Minimum 2 years’ experience as a Nurse Practitioner, orthopedic preferred.
Interpersonal skills including excellent communication skills to deal effectively with staff, patients and physicians in a knowledgeable, professional and courteous manner
Professional, pleasant, and enthusiastic demeanor
Ability to maintain confidentiality of patient records
Attends required meetings and participates in committees as requested.
Participates in professional development activities to keep current with health care trends and practices.
Maintains strictest confidentiality.
Must be able to travel to all sites if/when necessary.
