Court Name/Organization: Tennessee Middle Federal Public Defender Overview of the Position: The Federal Public Defender for the Middle District of Tennessee is accepting applications for a full-time attorney in the Capital Habeas Unit (CHU). This position will either be a Research & Writing Specialist (R&W) or an Assistant Federal Public Defender (AFPD), dependent on qualifications and experience.

This is an in-office position located downtown in Nashville, Tennessee.

We have a flexible telework schedule.

Location: Nashville, TN Opening and Closing Dates: 05/03/2024 - 05/31/2024 Appointment Type: Permanent Classification Level/Grade: JSP 12 - 15 or AD classification Salary: $86,962 Link to Court Careers Information: Announcement Number: 2024-10 Link to Job Announcement Position Description R&W: An R&W is an attorney position and will provide advanced research and writing support to Assistant Federal Public Defenders on habeas cases.

Specifically, the individual will research legal issues and assist in drafting positions, motions, and pre-hearing briefs.

They will assist lead counsel with discovery matters and with responses to dispositive motions.

AFPD: An AFPD is part of a team representing death-sentenced individuals in proceedings brought under 28 U.S.C.

§ 2254 responsible for representing death-sentenced clients in federal habeas corpus proceedings.

Qualification To qualify a person must be a graduate from an accredited law school, admitted to practice in good standing before the highest court of any state.

A general understanding of criminal law and federal criminal procedure is necessary.

The applicant should possess the ability to write clearly and present complex and interrelated concepts and ideas.

The applicant should have excellent interpersonal skills, good judgment, strong technical skills, the ability to prioritize, and the ability to work both independently and cooperatively.

Must be proficient with Microsoft Office applications.

Some travel will be required.
