Registered Nurse

The Rappahannock Regional Jail is seeking an RN to perform difficult advanced human support work assisting in the care and treatment of inmates detained in the regional Jail, performing patient assessments, triaging and assigning patients for the doctor's clinic, collecting medical data, and related work as apparent or assigned.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

Performs patient assessment during sick calls; prepares medical history; assigns patients to doctor's clinic.

Assesses, diagnoses, plans, implements and evaluates inmate medical needs; completes triage sick call slips; assigns patients for nurse sick calls.

Screens incoming patients; enters medical data into computer; researches patient requests that do not require clinic visit.

Performs standard clinical evaluation tests such as blood pressures, temperatures, drawing blood for laboratory testing; assesses conditions; dispenses prescriptions.

Confers with health care agencies, dentists, and other agencies involved in prescribing medications for inmates.

Assesses mental status of inmates during daily sick call or as needed; makes referrals to mental health personnel.

Administers medication to jail inmates; discusses inmate's condition with physician; orders medication; sets-up, dispenses and charts medication.

Prepares patients for emergency transport; coordinates movement and transportation of inmates with security; consults with on-call health care providers.

Precepts new employees.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree with coursework in nursing, or related field and moderate experience in professional nursing, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Possession of CPR and CPR Certified Instructor certifications upon hire.

Possession of Virginia Board of Nursing Registered Nurse (RN) license upon hire.

Valid driver's license in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Applicant must pass a criminal background, Drug Test, DMV check and polygraph examination.
