Job Description:

Summary:

SPIRAL and SPATIAL-Stats are research experiences for undergraduates (REU) programs aimed at providing a mentoring structure for undergraduate students that promotes active learning and engagement in problems in statistics and mathematics. Undergraduate students in the SPIRAL and SPATIAL-Stats will learn how to conduct scientific research. The SPATIAL-Stats program will run in conjunction with the Summer Program in Research and Learning (SPIRAL), a national award winning REU in existence for over 20 years.

Essential Functions:

The programs, running from June 2 to July 25, 2024, on the campus of Georgetown University in Washington, DC will have a three-pronged approach:

1) Students will participate in research seminars in mathematics, probability and statistics in which research projects will be investigated in teams. Each team will write a final paper discussing their results and give an oral presentation.

2) There will be an intensive seven-week course emphasizing proofs and problem solving with workshops and daily homework consisting of modules that will include Combinatorics, and Modeling the Spread of Infectious and Non-Infectious Diseases (Statistics).

3) Most weeks will have a day devoted to professional and career development, enhancing the students' view of the mathematical world.

The Teaching Assistant will coordinate with the faculty mentors to aid the students’ classwork, workshops, research and research presentations.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

They will be assigned to the 8-week program working with either SPIRAL (Mathematics) or SPATIAL-Stat.

The program runs five days a week from 9am to 5pm.

The TA is expected to be on campus for all meetings and is invited to four field trips during the summer.

Salary Information:

$5,000.

Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree preferred.
