Researcher/Breeder Subtropical Fruit

A successful horticultural agribusiness, specialising in the production, packing and marketing of subtropical fruit in the Mpumalanga Lowveld, is seeking a Researcher/Breeder. The position entails:

Conventional breeding of papaya.

Maintenance of hybrid lines.

General papaya production research.

General litchi research, including the evaluation of different cultivars.

Handling of phyto-sanitary requirements for cross-border movement of fruit from Mozambique.

Mentorship and guidance by the company’s senior plant breeder.

Involvement with expansion of plant breeding and propagation technology (micro-propagation i.e. tissue culture), in conjunction with leading international plant breeders and plant propagation specialists.

Participating in a multi-discipline management team, focusing on sub-tropical fruit production, packing and marketing. Requirements:

A tertiary qualification in a related specialist scientific field. A post-graduate qualification and specialisation in plant breeding will be a recommendation, i.e. plant genetics, plant breeding, biotechnology, horticulture. The minimum academic qualification is a BSc degree.

The position requires an intense interest and passion for breeding and general horticultural research.
