BASIC FUNCTION:

The Howard University Moorland-Spingarn Research Center has begun its Black Press Archives Digitization Project. The Center’s newspaper collection, the Black Press Archives, represents more than 2,000 newspaper titles from the United States, Africa, and the African Diaspora, including the legendary Chicago Defender, New York Amsterdam News, Los Angeles Sentinel, Washington Afro-American, Nigeria’s Anglo African, The Bomb from Trinidad and Tobago, and Le Soir from Haiti. The Black Press Archives team is focused on producing and publishing digital materials from physical archives. These newly digitized materials will be made available on a new online catalog website and will be supplemented by story-based content for the public to enjoy and learn from. For the Summer 2024 semester, the Black Press Archives team is embarking on an ambitious project to digitize items from our physical collection. This effort involves scanning individual newspaper issues and microfilm reels using our advanced scanning technology, ensuring that these historically significant documents are preserved and accessible. Each Student Intern joining the program will receive comprehensive training on our high-tech scanners and the specific processes we use to digitize our archives.

SUPERVISORY ACCOUNTABILITY:

The Archives Student Interns will support the Archives team and report to the Project Manager for the Black Press Archives at Howard University. NATURE AND SCOPE: As an Archives Student Intern of the Black Press Archives, you will digitize, catalog, and help preserve Black press archives for broader public access.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Assist with handling archival materials, including.

• Pulling, cataloging, organizing, and re-shelving archival materials, starting with those on microfilm

• Ensuring that library procedures are followed, specifically to ensure the security and preservation of archival materials Assist with preparing archival materials for digitization, including

• Learning and complying with FADGI federal guidelines

• Learning and complying with ProPublica software guidelines

• Conducting copyright permission/licensing research about archival materials

• Collaborating with the Communications team on the development of public content based on digitized materials Digitize archival materials

• Collaborate with the Archives team to scan more than 3,000 archival materials, including newspapers, press publications, and microfilm, using scanners and digital cameras, according to established protocols and specifications

• Collaborate with the Archives team to perform data entry of metadata and related dates, authors, publishers, titles, filenames, directory structures, and other conventions Develop the Black Press Archives long-term • Manage technical resources, guiding documentation, and/or media to track protocols for internal training purposes

• Demonstrated interest in the Black Press Archives

• Demonstrated initiative to work self-directed yet with a collaborative style

• Strong attention to detail and organization accuracy with recordkeeping

• Strong verbal and written communication skills

• Ability to successfully perform routine and repetitive tasks

• Ability to climb ladders, bend and stoop to access and move archival materials, and lift archival boxes weighing up to 40 lb
