The CENTERS team is innovative, entrepreneurial, trail-blazing, and ambitious for both CENTERS and our clients. Today, CENTERS provides management services for 14 clients.

Responsibilities:

Job Summary

The Coordinator, Competitive Sports and Camps is responsible for the administration of the intramural sport, club sport and youth camp program. The coordinator will collaborate with campus partners and department teammates to plan, schedule, and administer these programs. With support from direct reports, the coordinator will provide excellent customer service to program participants, manage program delivery and enforce sport rules, program and university policies.

This position will work on-site at our UAB location in the heart of this urban campus. University Recreation (URec) provides fitness, wellness, and recreational opportunities for the UAB community and beyond. The Campus Recreation Center gives UAB Students and URec members the opportunity to access a large aquatic center, fitness center, studio space, indoor 36-foot-high climbing wall, four gym courts, multipurpose gym, four racquetball courts, squash court, and indoor track.

Essential Functions:

Train officiating mechanics and game management skills

Develop and communicate intramural sport rules and program participation policies and procedures

Supervise competitive sport contests and provide staff with on-site evaluations

Communicate with campers parent/guardians

Manage and inventory of all camp and intramural sport equipment and supplies

Advise the club sports on individual activity and overall program operation

Monitor team rosters, eligibility, and schedules for intramural and club teams

Encourage and support intramural teams, officials, and club sports competition travel

Evaluate and assess program performance and effectiveness

Staff Supervision:

Recruit, hire, train, schedule and evaluate part-time student employees

Responsible for approving timecards and preparing necessary documents/reports for bi-weekly payroll

Site Specific Responsibilities:

Work with the Undergraduate Student Government Funding Board on annual club sport funding allocations

Coordinate club sport and intramural game schedules with athletic trainers for coverage

Develop a thriving environment that supports intramural teams, officials, and Club Sports to compete on a national level and bring back championships at NIRSA events and other opportunities

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree or 4 or more years of work experience required

Experience working in higher education, recreation, or sports

Demonstrated experience in managing and organizing intramurals, sport clubs and/or camps

Officiating experience preferred

Skills and Abilities:

Leadership and supervisory abilities

Strong written and verbal communication skills; confidence speaking with a variety of constituents and stakeholders

Ability to work as part of, and lead a team that collaborates effectively with colleagues

Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines

Entrepreneurial spirit and enthusiasm

Analytical skills to: identify problems, assess alternatives, and render consistent, logical decisions

Office, indoor and outdoor sporting, and non-sporting events environment

Maintain flexible hours for occasional sporting and other events that may occur on weekends and evenings

Physical Demands

Must be able to remain in a stationary position 70% of the work day

Consistently operates a computer and office equipment

Walking or working with natatorium and sport facilities 30% of the work day

Must be able to traverse throughout the building and campus. Must be able to match speed of movement to game play. Regularly ascending/descending building levels and occasionally ladders or stools.

Must be able to lift, move and set up items weighing as much as 50 lbs.

Must be able to discuss, converse with, and exchange accurate information with arena patrons, staff, stakeholders, etc.
