JOB TITLE: MECHANIC IV DEPARTMENT: CITY GARAGE NON-EXEMPT: YES FULL TIME: YES GRADE: H (RATE OF PAY: $23.94) JOB SUMMARY: The person employed in this capacity will perform his/her duties under the direction of the Shop Supervisor and the Director of the City Garage.

To perform preventative maintenance and repair work on all City vehicles and machinery.

Performs semi-skilled, and administrative work in maintaining the vehicles and mechanical equipment for the City of Jackson.\ ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: * Plan, carry out and evaluate preventive maintenance schedules for all vehicles and mechanical equipment, either personally, or through outside vendors.

* Operate a variety of diagnostic instruments and a variety of hand, electric, and air-tools.

* Test, service and repair vehicles and mechanical equipment.

* Inspect, adjust and replace necessary units and related parts in the performance of repair and maintenance work.

* Repair brakes, electrical, fuel, hydraulic, ignition, air, exhaust, and related systems.

* Change and repair tires and tubes.

* Evaluate status of mechanical equipment and vehicles, and perform or schedule needed repairs.

* Make road calls for service to vehicles and equipment.

* Pick up supplies and tools as needed.

* Must be able to use a heavy-duty 2- or 3-ton jack to lift heavy equipment in a safe manner.

* Secure tires in the tire cage when airing them up.

* Must be able to operate the tire changer machine to change tires.

* Conduct various analyses and inspections of vehicles and mechanical systems to determine the most cost-effective means of maintenance, repair or replacement.

* Perform all other duties as may be assigned by supervisor TOOLS/EQUIPMENT: * Motorized vehicles for mechanical testing purposes, power and hand tools and equipment for vehicle and mechanical system work; * Mechanic's tools including jacks, hydraulic lifts, air tools, and other tools required for minor repairs and routine maintenance of motorized vehicles; * Electronic vehicle diagnostic equipment; * Personal computer, calculator, phone; mobile or portable radio.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, DEGREES, CERTIFICATES, AND/OR LICENSE: * High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

* Ten (10) years of related experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

* Heavy Equipment Maintenance/Repair Certificate or ASE Master Technician Certification.

* Valid Driver's License.

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: * Thorough knowledge of automotive mechanics; * Considerable knowledge of gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, and generators; * Price trends and grades or quality of materials and equipment; * Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities; * Working knowledge of the practices, methods, materials and tools used in modern equipment maintenance.

* Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment.

* Ability to carry out assigned projects to their completion; * Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; * Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, vendors and the public.

* Ability to establish and maintain effective preventive maintenance programs, policies and procedures.

* Assist all lower level mechanics with completion of technical tasks.
