LEGAL ASSISTANT CLASSIFICATION TITLE: Legal Assistant PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION Performs legal administrative work for a trial team within the District Attorney's or Solicitor General's Office.

Prepares cases for arraignment, trial, motions, and grand jury calendars.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The following duties are normal for this position.

The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification.

Other duties may be required and assigned.

Performs legal administrative work for a trial team consisting of Assistant District Attorney/Assistant Solicitor General, Investigator Supervisor, and Investigator.

Creates file folders and orders mug shots; enters information and case numbers into computer system; forwards to appropriate Investigator.

Keeps monthly log of how many cases are given to each Assistant Attorney/Assistant Solicitor General and Investigator.

Prepares all arraignment, trial, motions, and grand jury calendars for assigned courtroom; maintains files for all calendars and distributes.

Responsible for ensuring all notices and subpoenas are mailed out in a timely manner.

Prepares all discovery to be given out at arraignment and trial calendar calls.

Responsible for ensuring all pleas are returned to the District Attorney's/Solicitor General's Office and processed, which may include drafting of nolle prosses, when appropriate, closing case out on computer and marking files accordingly.

Closes all Administrative Dismissals as well as processes the transfers to State Court.

At arraignment, responsible for ensuring all defense attorneys or the defendants receive copy of the State's discovery and marks calendar with all pertinent information.

Receives all calls and mail for assigned courtroom's Assistant District Attorney/Assistant Solicitor General and Investigator.

Assists callers regarding calendars, court dates, court appearance, bonds, etc.

Drafts accusations and indictments for assigned courtroom and ensures accusations are filed and placed on next available arraignment calendar.

Places detainers on subjects that are in State custody and prepares production orders for prisoners to be brought back to court.

Prepares detainer/extradition papers for subjects to secure their return to Clayton County and to answer charges.

This includes prisoners in custody out of state or in Federal custody.

Prepares all bench warrants and bond forfeitures for assigned courtroom; prepares calendar for all bond forfeitures and attends calendar call; prepares appropriate forms, i.e., judgments for cost or Rule Absolutes for judge's signature.

Prepares all appeals to be sent to the Court of Appeals or Supreme Court and keeps a log for the Assistant District Attorney/Assistant Solicitor General for all appeals pending.

Maintains calendar that informs the Assistant District Attorney/Solicitor General of brief due dates.

Prepares assigned courtroom's schedule for the following year and disburses to court personnel; makes any needed changes during the year and informs all concerned parties.

Drafts all correspondence for Assistant District Attorney/Solicitor General and Investigator as required; orders certified copies of previous convictions or defendants for assigned courtroom.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS Coordinates and chairs monthly/bi-monthly trial team meetings to ensure cases are being processed and handled appropriately in assigned courtroom and in the office.

Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS High School Diploma or GED supplemented by two (2) years of experience providing clerical support in a legal, administrative business, or professional environment; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

ADA COMPLIANCE Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or work station.

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds and visual cues or signals.

Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors: Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
