Under general direction, performs skill work of the journeyman leveling the maintenance and repair of all types of automotive and other gasoline-powered equipment.

May require some repair of diesel-powered equipment.

Employee may work independently of any technical supervision while making on-the-road repairs.

Oral and written instructions are received as to the nature of the work to perform.

The employee uses independent judgment as to the best method of repair.

Work is checked and/or tested upon completion.

(All duties listed may not be included in any one position, nor does the list include all tasks found in a position of this class.) * Drive a truck with the necessary tools and equipment to the location of the damaged tire or vehicle.

* Mount and dismount tires on heavy equipment, tractors, and backhoes.

* Replace damaged tires with new tires.

* Perform repairs on trucks, automobiles, mowers, and some pieces of heavy equipment.

* Repair and adjust brakes, repair and install fuel pumps and injectors, replace springs and shock absorbers, and change tires and grease equipment.

* Overhaul automobiles and trucks which includes repairing and installing wiring systems, wheel systems, brake systems, transmissions, clutch assemblies, differentials, dumping mechanisms, and any other defective parts.

Education and Experience * Any combination of training and experience that is equivalent to Graduation from standard senior high school.

* Two years experience in changing tires and repairing large vehicles, heavy equipment, tractors and backhoes.

* Proven work experience as a tire technician/mechanic.

Physical Requirements * Ability to perform heavy lifting up to 150lbs and to work in awkward positions.

* Work is performed both indoors and outdoors.

Employee may be subject to extreme temperatures, adverse weather conditions, and high noise levels.

Work is performed around machinery and equipment and risks exposure to traffic hazards, noise extremes, wetness, humidity, heights, fumes, dust, odors, solvents, grease/oil, skin irritants, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibrations.

Certifications or Licenses Required * Must hold a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (or obtain within six months of employment), and be insurable by the Madison County Commission's risk underwriters.

* Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) will be obtained and reviewed annually.

* Must be able to pass a DOT Commercial Driver's physical and drug screen.

* Must be registered for the FMCSA DOT Clearinghouse if you have a CDL License.
