This is a mid-level training position.

Technician will be "in production" and working independently most of the time.

Looking for a heavy truck technician.

He/she will still work under the guidance of senior level technicians as needed, but also make repairs and decisions on their own as much as possible.

This person will have gained knowledge of our equipment, procedures, business practices and expectations, and perform work tasks of a Fleet Technician I.

Must have a commitment to life-long learning to keep pace with new technology.

Work is performed under the supervision of the Shop Foreman.

Essential Tasks * Inspects, services, and repairs heavy trucks, trailers, and other equipment.

* Diagnose and repair of complex electronically controlled diesel engines, modern electrical systems, mobile electronic systems, air and braking systems, and complex hydraulic systems.

* Inspect vehicle systems, perform preventative maintenance, and diagnosis and repair of failed components on the vehicle's body, chassis, and/or auxiliary systems.

* Utilize fleet maintenance software to accurately document work performed.

* Communicate will all levels of fleet operations to ensure repairs are completed to the customer's satisfaction.

* Interpret manuals, electrical diagrams, and diagnostic software.

* Performs basic tire services including flat tire repair and tire replacement as needed.

* Inspects city vehicles for compliance with state safety standards.

* Performs custodial, pick-up and delivery chores as necessary.

* Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies.

Qualifications * Formal Education/Experience * Minimum two years' experience at an automotive or heavy truck dealership.

* Formal education which includes basic arithmetic and/or business math.

* Graduation from high school plus experience and understanding in the operation of an automotive, truck, or industrial maintenance facility.

* High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Valid North Carolina Driver's LicenseClass B CDL or obtain within 12 months.NC Emission/Safety Inspection License or be able to obtain in 180 days.NC Emission/Safety Inspection License or obtain within 6 months from date of hire date.Preferred Skills * Associate degree in automotive technology.

* 5+ years of basic understanding in the operation of an automotive, truck, or industrial maintenance facility.

* Class B CDL * NC Emission/Safety Inspection License.

Special Requirements Physical Requirements Hearing/Speaking - Expressing and/or receiving information by means of spoken word are both necessary to converse with internal and external customers including co-workers, citizens, and applicants.

Visual Abilities - the ability to perceive via eyesight is required for this position: * Acuity, far - clarity of vision at 20 feet or more.

Must be able to see from a distance when administering and observing employment tests, operating a motor vehicle, or addressing an audience.

* Acuity, near - clarity of vision at 20 inches or less.

Must be able to see work-related business documents close at hand.

* Depth perception - Three-dimensional vision and the ability to judge distance and space relationships.

* Field of Vision - the area that can be seen up and down or to the right or left while eyes are focused on one point.

Must be able to see a wide span of area.

* Accommodation - Must be able to adjust the eye lens to glance quickly.

Physical Strength - degree of physical demands typically associated with this position include: * Light Work * Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally; and/or * Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently; and * A negligible amount of force constantly to handle or move materials related to the position.

* Type of Physical Demands * Reaching - Extending the hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.

* Handling - Seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with hand(s). * Fingering - Picking, pinching or otherwise working with fingers primarily rather than the entire hand or arm.

Mental Activity/Requirements Reasoning * Ability to apply principles of logical thinking combined with knowledge of principles and practices of public personnel and employment laws to work tasks and handle practical situations, comprehend, and respond to a variety of situations in a timely fashion and exercise good judgment.

Mathematics Ability * Using arithmetic and/or Statistics: Ability to direct and oversee the use of arithmetic and/or statistics in the preparation of a variety of tests and reports.

Language Ability * The ability to speak, read and write the English Language are required for this position.

Environmental Conditions Physical Surroundings * The Worker is subject to Inside and Outside Environmental Conditions: Employee will normally be working inside of buildings with protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes.

Employees are subject to all weather conditions including very hot and extremely cold, rain, wind, and ice.

Hazards * Employees will be exposed to refuse trucks, petroleum products, hazardous materials and chemicals associated with a fleet maintenance facility.

Work is subject to final standards of OSHA on bloodborne pathogens.

Machinery/Tools/Work Aids/Other Equipment * Computers, printers and related software, telephone, diagnostic tools, power tools, hand tools, service vehicles, hydraulic lifts, and other equipment found in a vehicle and equipment service shop.
