This position is full time, 7.5 hours per day, Monday through Friday, during the school year. See attached calendar for exact work dates.

Summary:

The purpose of this position is to assist the District Nurse in meeting the comprehensive health needs of students in the educational environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Provides appropriate first aid and basic emergency care for illness or injuries according to district established policies and procedures; Refers emergency situations to parents, health care provider, or hospital as necessary.

Prioritizes student care in health office based on symptoms of illness or level of injury.

Administers medications and carry out nursing procedures independently according to licensure and knowledge base as directed by the District Nurse.

Maintains ongoing communication with students, their parents, teachers, school staff, principal, and district nurse. Communicates to the District Nurse any need for follow-up of student health concerns.

Assists in planning and implementation of school health screenings under the supervision of the district nurse.

Maintains student health records, including entering immunizations, health conditions, daily health office log and screening results.

Performs clerical duties associated with school health office, including but not limited to running health office reports, creating forms, managing immunization mailings, and organizing health information for school sponsored activities.

Assists in the control of communicable diseases.

Orders, maintains and properly stores all necessary supplies and equipment in the health office.

Maintains current certification in CPR, First Aid, blood borne pathogens and other trainings as required.

Supports and facilitates implementation of student health protocols and school health policies and guidelines (such as life threatening allergy guidelines).

Follows through with directives and instructions consistently from District Nurse, independently makes decisions and solves problems to meet the needs of students according to licensure and knowledge base.

Creates a caring health room climate to meet student health needs and facilitate return to class.

Reinforces behaviors and educate students on meeting their health needs. Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

Licensed Practical Nurse, graduate of accredited school for Licensed Practical Nursing or equivalent with one to two years nursing experience.

CPR Certification or ability to obtain within 30 days of start date.

Must possess a valid driver's license. Minimum Physical and Mental Abilities Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

Physical Requirements

Ability to perform light to moderate physical work, frequently lifting up to 10 to 15 pounds without assistance and when needed, lifting up to 50 to 80 pounds with assistance.

Ability to reach in all directions with full range of motion, bend/stoop and use hand/eye coordination to assist students in any required capacity when needed. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to work independently within the guidelines of policy and procedure using discretion and good judgment.

Ability to react quickly, calmly, and decisively in a crisis.

Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks requiring timelines and accuracy.

Demonstrated ability to be a collaborative and confidential team member.

Ability to use various health and first aid equipment and supplies. Mathematical Ability

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide and calculate decimals and percentages

Language Ability and Interpersonal Communication

Ability to comprehend, interpret and/or prepare a variety of documents, including immunization and health history records, diagnostic and lab reports, Health Services handbook, First Aid manuals, communicable disease charts, etc. according to licensure and knowledge base.

Ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures and follow instructions

Ability to use and interpret medical terminology

Ability to communicate effectively with teachers, students, parents, administrators, nurses, Social workers, guidance counselors, speech and language psychologists, delivery persons, Police officers, School Board members, the general public, and others verbally and in writing Environmental Adaptability

Ability to work effectively in an office environment

Exposure to bodily fluids and communicable diseases
