Job Description:Maryland Environmental Service (MES) has an opening in the Environmental Dredging and Restoration Group for one of the following, a full time Environmental Specialist Trainee (EST) or Environmental Specialist (ES) at the Paul S. Sarbanes Ecosystem Restoration Project at Poplar Island, an environmental restoration project, located in the Chesapeake Bay in Talbot County, Maryland. Classification offered is commensurate with experience. The primary responsibilities for the Environmental Specialist classification include field work (water quality sampling, monitoring, and invasive control), operation of site crew and sampling vessels, writing and formatting technical reports, meeting summaries, procurements, outreach activities and providing site tours, data review and compilation, permit support, and other support tasks as required. The chosen candidate will need to drive to field sites or labs to fulfill sampling/monitoring requirements and to ride to and from the project site on a crew vessel and be able to work in various weather and field conditions.

EST: Under direction of a supervisor, assists with collection, compilation, and review of data for monitoring compliance of environmental operation, construction and monitoring activities with Federal, State, and local permit and regulatory requirements. Assists with the preparation of technical documents, reports and plans. Provides entry-level scientific, technical, and planning support. Attends project related meetings and prepares meeting summaries.

ES: Assists with monitoring compliance of environmental operation, construction and monitoring activities with Federal, State, and local permit and regulatory requirements. Assists with the preparation of technical documents. Provides scientific and technical support. Assists with reviewing and compiling comments on reports and data submitted by subcontractors. Attends project related meetings and prepares meeting summaries. Assists with environmental documentation and permitting technical services. Provides procurement support.

Estimated Pay Range:

EST: $41,818.89 – $45,600.00

ES: $46,001.76 - $54,350.00

Minimum Requirements:

For an EST: a bachelor’s degree in environmental science, engineering, ecology, biology, chemistry, geology or a related field from an accredited college or university, no prior experience required. For an ES: in addition to the education listed above, must have a minimum of one year of experience in environmental science, regulations, engineering, or management. Possession of a valid driver’s license with less than 5 points.

Preferred but not required skills: Fluent in MS Office Word, Excel, and Power Point and knowledge of water quality sampling, permits, and chains of custody. Experience in invasive control including herbicide spraying, and wetland and upland plant identification. Experience with writing technical reports and data management. Experience in driving a 4WD vehicle and operation of various field equipment and boats. Possession of a Maryland safe boater certificate. Experience interacting with the public and providing tours.
