TitleChief Nursing Officer and Vice President of Patient Care Services - Bronson Lakeview and South Haven

Reporting to the COO BBC and in collaboration with the CMO this role plans, organizes, directs, controls, and evaluates the activities of personnel engaged in providing direct patient care through the department of Patient Care Services. Leads and serves in the continuous advancement of Nursing professional practice vision, strategy, resource support and measured results. Leads and serves in the strategic and operational improvement of the health system. Contributes nursing leadership and expertise to decisions and efforts at the executive team level. Serves as a principal champion for quality patient care. Provides high-performance leadership and management organization wide. Ensures collaboration and cooperation between subordinate departments and others engaged in delivering patient care in all appropriate settings. Serves as the principal liaison with the medical staff, other hospital committees and departments, and external organizations.

The Chief Nursing Officer has the following duties and responsibilities:

Work with HR to develop strategic and tactical plans by leveraging career events, school visits, advisory boards and other community and education-based outreach to attract, recruit and retain nursing staff

Develops and secures approval of a coordinated budget for areas of responsibility and guides subordinate managers in the development of their budgets as necessary. Administers or delegates the administration of budgets, approving expenditures, reviewing reports, etc.

Designs new models of nursing care incorporating appropriate technology and process redesign to promote efficiency

Organize and lead a results-oriented meeting in a concise manner.

Wherever the clinical staff impact Safety, Quality and Patient Experience, the CNO, in partnership with SVP Quality & Chief Medical Officer, will be involved in determining overall strategies, tactics and metrics while directing and monitoring a comprehensive quality improvement program for patient care. Coordinates quality improvement activities with those of the Quality Improvement Department and other departments and committees.

Partner with the Executive Leadership in the development of salaries and budgets, and plan for appropriate staffing levels

Improves communication across the hospital on issues involving operations, services and best practice in the hospital and throughout the system.

Responsible for the development and administration of nursing care delivery systems designed to provide patient care in a cost-effective fashion through continued evaluation of and appropriate revisions to nursing services. Works to achieve optimal care to patients with increasingly higher acuity within the constraints of stable or declining resources.

Demonstrate commitment to providing outstanding customer service in a manner that is reflective of our mission, values and customer service standards.

Demonstrate continuing education through workshops and seminars; participates in on-going professional and personal development.

Monitors and reviews requirements and standards of various accrediting, governmental, and regulatory agencies to ensure that current patient care practices, policies, and procedures adhere to appropriate standards of practice. Recommends needed changes. Participates in preparation for review by outside agencies and evaluates and implements recommendations for modifications in current practice standards as appropriate.

Hires and manages subordinate managerial personnel and assists them in planning staffing patterns for their areas of responsibility. Evaluates, develops, and when necessary, disciplines and discharges subordinate personnel, delegating such matters to supervisory and managerial employees as appropriate.

Exceptional presentation skills

Minimum Qualifications:

Masters degree in nursing, Business Administration, Healthcare Finance or Hospital Administration required. PhD or DNP preferred.

Active Michigan state licensure in good standing required

10 years in nursing leadership positions including hospital Chief Nursing Officer or equivalent experience preferred

Leadership and development experience with large teams

Departmental budget planning and development

Quality and safety processes and reporting

Familiarity with hospital regulatory environment

Proficient in the use of computers, excellent written and oral communication skills, and systems thinking capabilities

Knowledge of nursing management, quality improvement, LEAN or other optimization skills, financial analysis, process & planning, strategic planning principles, nursing standards of care and practice, ethical principles and nursing and healthcare trends required

Work which produces levels of mental/visual fatigue which are typical of jobs that perform a wide variety of duties with frequent and significant uncontrollable deadlines. Work may include the operation of and full attention to a personal computer or CRT up to 40 percent of the time. The job produces some physical demands. Typical of jobs that include regular walking, standing, stooping, bending, sitting, and some lifting of light weight objects.
