Axle Informatics is seeking a skilled, adaptable, and detail-oriented Senior Systems Engineer (Security Operations) to join our vibrant team at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) supporting the National Center for Advancing Translational Science (NCATS) located in Bethesda, MD. (Hybrid – Must be in the Northern, VA, Maryland, DC area)

Position Summary

The candidate for the COE role will support our federal customers by providing operational system and security engineering support, and more specifically in threat investigation and vulnerability hands-on remediation.

Responsibilities:

Security vulnerabilities investigation and resolution

Analyze, troubleshoot, and investigate security-related, IT system anomalies based on security platform reporting, network traffic, log files and host-based / automated security alerts

Lead security vulnerabilities resolution in collaboration with operations and development teams, and provide detailed incident reports, including root cause analysis, impact assessment, and recommended actions for prevention and future incident response improvement

Develop, test and deploy automated scripts (BigFix, GPOs, Ansible) to fix security vulnerabilities or patch systems on Windows and Linux servers

Take care of monthly OS / middleware patching

Keep Operating Systems security baseline configurations up-to-date

Actively contribute on security-related Windows / Linux initiatives (MFA roll-out, OS migration, etc.)

Contribute to activity maturity

Design and improve security controls (e.g., baseline monitoring) to protect information systems, enterprise applications and data

Optimize tooling and automate recurring tasks

Proactively identify and investigate common security issues and recommend mitigation strategies, while also surfacing opportunities for automation to improve efficiency and effectiveness

Maintain and update relevant system and process documentation

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in computer science or similar field. Master’s degree preferred

At least one active security focused certification, such as CompTIA Security+, CompTIA CySA+, CISSP, etc.

Minimum 5 years of Linux/Windows engineering experience

Minimum 5 years of experience working in a Production support environment

Proven experience with Splunk: building queries, dashboards, and reports

Skill in one or more scripting languages (Bash, Python, Perl, or other multi-platform automation tools)

Knowledge of new and emerging IT and cybersecurity technologies

Effective communication skills (verbal and written) ensuring clear and effective communication with senior government leaders and technical peers

Experience with Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) guidelines, Risk Management Framework (RMF), NIST SP 800-53, Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs) and Security Content Automation Protocol (SCAP) Compliance Checker

Knowledge of authentication, authorization, and access control methods

Previous NIH or Federal experience is a plus
