The Duke University Police Officers serve the Duke campus and Duke University Hospital. Certified by the State of North Carolina, Duke officers meet the same standards as state and municipal officers. The department is allocated over 70 police officers, and patrol officers work 12 hour shifts. Currently, officers are assigned to permanent day or night shifts, working a scheduled 14 days of every 28. There are opportunities such as investigations, crime prevention, training, etc. The Department is nationally accredited through CALEA.

Essential Job Duties:

Police Officer duties include, but are not limited to the following:

Crime suppression and law enforcement are primary responsibilities

Protect life and property

Identify, apprehend and arrest suspects

Apply appropriate use of force based on law enforcement best practices

Obtain and serve warrants, subpoenas and other court documents

Testify in criminal, civil and administrative hearings

Respond to emergency and non-emergency situations and drills; administer aid, as needed

Prepare reports, as needed

Identify trend patterns as appropriate

Operate law enforcement vehicles and equipment

Proactively assist community members in identifying and solving community problems

Manage conflict through negotiation.

Uphold the highest standards of conduct and customer service while serving and protecting our community and taking measures to prevent crime

Other duties and tasks as assigned by supervisor(s) and/or their designees.

Other Duties

Provide police services for Duke special events including NCAA Division I athletic events and community sponsored events

Provide security for national and international dignitaries.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Experience/Education

High School Diploma or GED; Associate degree, Bachelor's degree preferred.

Other Required Qualifications

Must be at least 20 years of age

Successful completion of North Carolina's Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET).

Requires a comprehensive criminal and background check

In-state, out-of-state, and Military Police lateral transfers are accepted.

Must complete a financial background check

Must complete a psychological evaluation

Required License or Certification

Ability to obtain general certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions established by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission for certified law enforcement officers.
