Reporting to the Vice President, Chief Legal & Risk Officer (VP), the Director, Legal Services is a senior legal advisor to the corporation, providing leadership to and oversight of the Legal Services department.

The Director is primarily responsible for the performance and day-to-day operations of the department, which includes leading a team of Legal Counsel Leads, Internal Review Officers, Legal Administrative Assistants and Legal Services Clerks. The Director is also responsible for overseeing all corporate projects or initiatives assigned to them, serving on corporate committees and for ensuring that the Board of Directors is adequately supported whenever the VP is unavailable.

Responsibilities:

Responsible for all activities of a Director, including management of a significant operating budget, participation in strategic planning, long term human resource planning, budgeting for special projects, and improvement initiatives.

Motivate, encourage, and inspire the development of strong, effective, efficient, ethical, and professional teams with a clear focus on the delivery of planned outcomes.

Provide legal advice and support to the VP, including ensuring that the Board of Directors is adequately supported whenever the VP is unavailable.

May assist the VP with representing the corporation before the Public Utilities Board.

Act as general legal advisor to the corporation on a wide variety of legal issues.

Establish short- and long-term strategy, objectives, and key performance indicators for the department to ensure that the department provides exceptional service in a fiscally prudent manner.

Recommend changes to legislation applicable to the corporation and assist with drafting or evaluating legislative changes.

Conduct research to ensure that best practices are identified, documented, and implemented.

Assess and interpret regulatory and legal decisions to determine trends and future concerns.

Proposes mitigation strategies and responses to emerging trends and future concerns as appropriate.

Contribute to the overall growth and development of the corporation by participating as a member of the Senior Leadership Team (Directors), and other corporate steering committees as required to provide input and guidance.

Qualifications:

Law degree from a recognized Canadian law school (or equivalent).

Call to The Manitoba Bar.

10 years of progressive experience in the practice of law.

Experience in litigation and advocacy including experience before administrative tribunals.

Experience in the fields of administrative law and/or corporate/commercial law.

Supervisory/management experience.

Knowledge of the Corporation, its mandates, governing legislation, structure, and operations.

Knowledge of the Personal Injury Protection Plan.

Knowledge of the General Rate Application process as it applies to the Corporation.

Proficiency in legal research methods.
