The Design Project Engineer in Training (EIT) in Transportation Planning and Design will be involved in the design of arterial and other transportation facilities that are approved under the Capital Program to be completed in-house or by external consulting Engineers. EIT engineering assignments are of limited scope and complexity under the supervision of the signing engineers (Project Engineers and Senior Engineers) and working alongside technicians, and technologists. The Design EIT will be immersed in the production of Concept, Preliminary (Development), and Detailed design of transportation projects ranging from Rehabilitation, Reconstruction, and Streetscape of roadway, transit, bicycle, and pedestrian facilities. This position will be involved in producing design deliverables including roll plans, reports, technical analysis, and detailed construction drawings ensuring they are completed in alignment with engineering principles, the City of Edmonton Drafting and Design Standards and Federal, Provincial, and Civic guidelines.

The Project Management EIT in Transportation Planning and Design will aid in producing internal submissions, reviewing external submissions, coordinating project activities with internal and external stakeholders, and assisting the lead managers with planning, design and project management activities. Independent generation of recommendations and decision-making will also be required while reporting directly to the Project or Program Manager.

Work with in-house engineering technologists to prepare and recommend for design approval of Concept, Preliminary, Tender/Proposal and Issued for Construction (IFC) engineering drawings

Work with in-house project engineers to prepare technical reports and analysis required for Concept and Preliminary (Development) Design deliverables

Work with the Develop and Deliver Project Management teams to facilitate the accurate and timely delivery of in-house design projects

Apply the City of Edmonton Complete Streets Design and Construction standard, Transportation Association of Canada guidelines and renewal best practices in the design

Complete preliminary walks and data collection to determine feasibility, existing conditions, constraints and potential issues of transportation renewal projects

Review proposed utility installation circulations within arterial project areas

Work with in-house engineering technologists to prepare, coordinate, track, complete and circulate as-built drawings, and general document and drawing control

Provide feedback/recommendations/comments on and recommend for approval externally prepared Concept, Preliminary, Tender/Proposal & IFC engineering drawings

Respond to inquiries from engineering consultants related to design practices, standards, guidelines and design exceptions, with support from section design engineers

Respond to the public inquiries related to the projects led by Transportation Planning and Design

Sit on City internal committees or working groups such as safety and engagement committees, change management working groups, etc.

Provide support to the leadership team on implementation of the Department’s Health and Safety and ENVISO programs

Conduct any additional field work or site inspections (not covered in the points above)

Assist project managers in planning and facilitation of stakeholder and public engagement activities

Process consultant invoice payments and support contract management tasks as required

A Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from a recognized university

Must be an Engineer in Training (EIT) in good standing and registered with APEGA and working towards a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) designation. Applicants from a different Canadian jurisdiction eligible for Inter-Provincial Mobility (IPMA) with APEGA may be considered. Registration with APEGA must be obtained before the commencement of employment

Field and related experience in the area of transportation

Co-op and/or Summer work experience in Transportation or Roadway design is considered an asset

Knowledge of geometric design of roadways and familiarity with design standards and guidelines such as the City of Edmonton Complete Streets Design and Construction standards and TAC (Transportation Association of Canada) guidelines and principles is considered an asset

Knowledge of City Bylaws, Servicing Standards, procedures and specifications is considered an asset

Additional training or knowledge of traffic engineering, structural engineering, drainage engineering, and roadway structural construction techniques is considered an asset

Well developed communication (presentation, verbal and written), interpersonal and relationship building skills are required

Ability to multitask, prioritize and produce results in a fast-paced, changing environment

Must be proficient with Google Suite (Gmail, Calendar, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms)

Experience with AutoCAD and Civil3D is an asset

Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license or operator's licensing equivalent. Applicant may be required to obtain business use auto insurance

The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.

Salary: $32.018 - $38.918 (Hourly); $66,853.580 - $81,260.780 (Annually)
