Summary / purpose of the position

The primary responsibility of the Medical Science Liaison (MSL) is to develop peer-to-peer relationships with key external stakeholders, aligned to our rare disease portfolios. These relationships will facilitate the exchange of scientific information around key therapeutic areas, the communication of emerging data, the response to questions from health care practitioners and the identification of research partners with a focus on improving patient care. This position is also critical in gathering insights around treatment trends, experience with Ipsen products, and the constantly evolving healthcare environment, all to align our company efforts with opportunities to improve patient outcomes.

Preference for candidates located in the Greater Toronto Area. The MSL will primarily be responsible for a territory that includes Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta and BC and will interact with customers within this territory, both in-person and virtually. It is anticipated that the MSL will travel about 60% of the time.

Main responsibilities / job expectations

Identify and develop peer-to-peer relationships with regional and national medical experts aligned with Ipsen Canada’s therapeutic areas of interest, and consistent with the strategy and objectives of Medical Affairs.

Support the development of annual and regional medical affairs plans in rare disease, as appropriate, and in collaboration with the internal medical team.

Establish ongoing scientific exchange with experts to discuss current and emerging therapies; this can include advisory boards, individual meetings, and congresses.

Proactively identify potential research sites and assist as needed in facilitation of externally-sponsored clinical trials.

Identify and assist, as needed, in initiation and closure of investigator-sponsored clinical trials (ISS).

Contribute to the identification of unmet medical needs in rare disease.

Develop and maintain scientific, clinical and therapeutic expertise in rare disease.

Provide appropriate scientific, clinical, and educational expertise for internal and external customers.

Contribute to the development and delivery of scientific training to Sales Representatives.

Coordinate scientific activities with medical affairs, clinical development, and global franchise groups, as needed.

Represent the company at specific continuing medical educational events, programs, medical meetings, and scientific conventions.

Knowledge, abilities & experience

Advanced degree in life sciences preferred (e.g. MD, PhD, PharmD, etc.). Candidates with an MSc degree or equivalent would be considered if they have demonstrated appropriate and substantial MSL experience.

2+ years’ experience as an MSL in the pharmaceutical industry preferred

Experience in Rare Disease or GI preferred

Clinical trials/research experience a strong asset

Bilingualism (French & English) may be required depending on assigned territory

Must be a strategic thinker who can look ahead and clearly anticipate future needs, consequences, trends and identify solutions

Excellent scientific acumen and ability to analyze scientific data quickly and accurately

Experience in preparation of materials for use by Medical Affairs and experience in review/editing promotional materials, an asset

Ability to communicate scientific and clinical information clearly and credibly verbally and in writing

Must act ethically and with integrity and able to make sound and compliance-guided judgments

High level of collaboration and influencing skills

Ability to work independently and within cross-functional teams while also being a self-motivator with strong drive for result driven success

Ability to travel in Canada and occasionally outside of Canada. Approximately 60% of the time

Business travel by air or car is regularly required. Driver’s license required.
