Scope:
The Controls Engineer oversees the integrity of the plant’s automation and control production systems and their associated components. He/she achieves these objectives by employing knowledge of automated controls, understanding theory of operation, and process flow, and material properties. The Controls Engineer serves as a bridge between activities of such groups as Production, QC, Maintenance and Engineering. The objectives include yield and quality improvements, developing investment scope, scale up, start ups, pilot plant management, product transfers etc.
Essential Duties and Key Responsibilities:
Perform automation and control system designs through selection of appropriate instrumentations, software, and logic development to meet equipment and process intended operation.
Participate in the development of Functional Design Specifications for capital projects
Take an active role in the continuous improvement of production control systems and components with an aim at improved capacity, flexibility, and meeting additional needs while complying with associated regulations
Responsible for design and implementation of production equipment integration. Assist in developing accurate, well defined process parameters
Assist in training of the operating personnel in principles of unit operations, process control, controls technicians, maintenance and safety
Assist maintenance in evaluation of the equipment repairs and procedures, this is to include evaluation of the replacement parts for optimal performance
Operate computer-assisted engineering and design software and equipment to perform engineering tasks
Prepare and update detailed documentation of existing and new systems to include, diagrams, schematics, functional specifications, version control, etc.
Confer with engineers, vendors or others to discuss existing and potential engineering projects or products
Analyze system requirements, capacity, cost, and customer needs to determine feasibility of project and develop system plan
Inspect electronic equipment, instruments, products, or systems to ensure conformance to specifications, safety standards, or applicable codes or regulations
Qualifications:
4 year degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or similar discipline
Minimum 3 years engineering experience in a manufacturing environment
Experience with PLCs and HMIs to include hardware selection, program design and development, and system integration
Experience managing projects preferred
Experience in a food grade environment (FDA, GMP’s, HACCP) with high speed packaging equipment preferred
Continuous improvement experience a plus
Demonstrated ability to multi-task and prioritize different projects and workload
Proven ability to communicate effectively, (written and verbally) with peers, management, contractors and vendors
Physical Demands:
Must be able to physically perform the functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions
Must possess visual acuity to document company records
Must be able to lift 40 pounds
