Position Summary:

Unit Overview

Med Surg Vision

A top functioning inpatient nursing unit at Orlando Health with the most qualified, caring, and ENGAGED

team members. Our talented and UNITED team members are focused on growth and development as

they attain higher education and certifications. Our team ASSURES patients and families by exceeding

quality and patient experience metrics.

South Tower 5A/5C Medical Surgical units at Orlando Regional Medical Center have the maximum

capacity of 52 bed semi-private rooms (5A 20 beds/5C 32 beds) with the capability of taking care of a

variety of med-surg patients with a non-critical status. Our units accept patients who are long term,

pending placement, or looking for a skilled nursing facility along with other placement challenges. Our

units also accept patients who are admitted for surgical implications, medical management,

amputations, and other disease processes such as hypertension, pneumonia, COVID-19, and diabetes.

Our units are also capable of cardiac monitoring with remote telemetry. If our patients become critically

ill and exceed medical surgical level of care; we safely transfer to a stepdown/critical care unit.

Ideal Ratio:

• Nurses: 5:1

• Nursing Assistants: 8:1

• Charge Nurse on 5A Charge Nurse on 5C with no patient assignment

Position Summary

Performs general patient care such as, hygiene, mobility, nutrition, and increased/constant observation in a basic role with the guidance

and mentoring of the Registered Nurse.

Responsibilities:

Essential Functions

• Provides routine treatments and interventions consistent with the educational level and skills learned in the academic environment

and demonstrated competency through Orlando Health.

• Performs advanced skills after achievement of demonstrated competencies such as: nasogastric tube irrigation, suctioning, and

removal; wound irrigation; complex dressing change without packing of wounds; maintenance of enteral tube feeding (Dobhoff,

Nasogastric, and Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy); and tracheostomy care.

• Performs increase or continuous visual observation for Baker Act, behavioral health and suicide risk patients as assigned.

• Assists patients with hygiene, mobility, and nutritional needs.

• Maintains safety and security of patients, families, self, and other members of the healthcare team.

• Utilizes the Safe Patient Room Environment Checklist with change of staff or transfer of care as part of handoff for Baker Act,

behavioral health, and suicide risk patients.

• Assures patient privacy, rights, and confidentiality.

• Follows standard precautions. Adheres to Hand Hygiene and PPE procedures.

• Communicates appropriate information regarding the patient’s condition to the registered nurse (RN) and other members of the

healthcare team.

• Participates in handoff report and purposeful hourly rounding on patients.

• Documents information according to Orlando Health specific policies and guidelines.

• Transports and assists patientsthrough the admission and discharge process. Transports Baker Act, behavioral health and suicide risk

patients to diagnostic testing and procedures.

• Maintains a safe and clean environment.

• Provides exceptional service and or care to all patients, families, customers, and team members.

• Transports and delivers items, equipment, blood products and medications (excluding substances and IV chemotherapy drugs)

throughout the facility.

• Receives and processes incoming calls, patient calls and guest requests.

• May have limited access to areas storing medications.

• Provides exceptional service and or care to all patients, families, customers, and team members.

• Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state

and local standards.

• Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.

Other Related Functions

• Completes all mandatory training.

• Participates in nursing Performance Improvement (PI) activities as assigned.

• Demonstrates awareness of legal issues, patient rights and compliance with the standards of regulatory and accrediting agencies.

• Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the population of patients served on his or her

assigned unit.

• Possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status.

• Interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs

• Provides the care needed as described in Orlando Health’s policies and procedures.

• Consistently uses time and resources effectively and efficiently.

• Performs all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education/Training

• Nursing student currently enrolled in an accredited nursing program at a college or university.

• Must have completed a minimum of one semester of nursing clinical rotations.

• Proof of continued enrollment in accredited pre-licensure, professional nursing program with no break in enrollment to exceed

one year.

Licensure/Certification

Maintains current BLS/Healthcare provider certification.
