Description:

Who we are

Helsing is a defence AI company. Our mission is to protect our democracies. We aim to achieve technological leadership, so that open societies can continue to make sovereign decisions and control their ethical standards.

As democracies, we believe we have a special responsibility to be thoughtful about the development and deployment of powerful technologies like AI. We take this responsibility seriously.

We are an ambitious and committed team of engineers, AI specialists and customer-facing programme managers. We are looking for mission-driven people to join our European teams – and apply their skills to solve the most complex and impactful problems. We embrace an open and transparent culture that welcomes healthy debates on the use of technology in defence, its benefits, and its ethical implications.

The role

As the UK Information Security Officer, you will have the opportunity to shape and enable Helsing UK’s Security and IT posture, impacting the businesses approach, our security processes and cyber protection, and help to establish a secured IT environment. This is a key position within a rapidly scaling organisation. You will report to the Head of Information Security UK.

The day-to-day

Support the UK Head of Infosec, UK MD and Helsing’s CSO with setting and applying the required information security standards for gaining and maintaining security standards.

Design, implementation, and operation of required security standards such as ISO 27001 and specific UK standards such as Cyber Essentials+ and Secure by Design.

Collaborating on the provisioning, operation and continuous optimisation of network and host security tools and security controls, e.g., Microsoft 365 advanced security features or endpoint and Internet Access security.

Support Helsing’s Security Engineering team with the delivery and enablement of security awareness trainings, e.g. secure coding practices.

Identifying areas to focus on proactive/initiative-driven efforts to harden Helsing’s information security posture.

Helping maintain an understanding of the threats and risks including maintaining risk and controls registers.

Assessing and assuring the design and operation of security measures and controls including physical, digital, personnel and process.

Support the Technology and Engineering department with provisioning, operation, and continuous optimisation of the software development environment, including required tools such as code repositories and build pipelines based on GitLab.

Support operation and continuous optimisation of the corporate IT environment, primarily based on Microsoft 365 and various other SaaS solutions.

Configuration, hardening and operation of endpoints, including workstations, laptops, mobile devices and the communication and collaboration technology.

Configuration and operation of our office infrastructure, LAN, and WAN in our Helsing sites.

Support and advise Helsing staff with their IT equipment.

You should apply if you

Have demonstrable experience working with: Information Security Management Systems, ISO 27001 or the NIST Cyber Security Frameworks, and wider IT controls.

Are comfortable in conducting Risk assessment and Control Assessments.

Have a good understanding of cyber security and current and emerging threat vectors.

Understand physical protective measures.

Have excellent communication skills for engaging at all levels within an organisation. We are a flat organisation so briefing to/working with the C-Suite can be expected.

Demonstrate strong problem-solving, critical thinking, and analytical skills with a curiosity to learn innovative technology and ways of working.

Can work independently in a dynamic, high-paced environment.

Nice to have

Experience in designing cybersecurity polices and controls.

Experience in dealing with APT or state actor threats.

Experience or interest in the Defence sector.

Experience working in technical national security environments.

Note: The above bullet points describe the ideal candidate. None of us matched all of these at once when we first joined Helsing. We encourage you to apply even if you believe you meet only part of our wish list.

This position requires the successful applicant to apply for and be granted UK security clearance at SC (Security Check) level and potentially other NATO security clearances.

Join Helsing and work with world-leading experts in their fields

Helsing’s work is important. You’ll be directly contributing to the protection of democratic countries while balancing both ethical and geopolitical concerns.

The work is unique. We operate in a domain that has highly unusual technical requirements and constraints, and where robustness, safety, and ethical considerations are vital. You will face unique Engineering and AI challenges that make a meaningful impact in the world.

Our work frequently takes us right up to the state of the art in technical innovation, be it reinforcement learning, distributed systems, generative AI, or deployment infrastructure. The defence industry is entering the most exciting phase of the technological development curve. Advances in our field of world are not incremental: Helsing is part of, and often leading, historic leaps forward.

In our domain, success is a matter of order-of-magnitude improvements and novel capabilities. This means we take bets, aim high, and focus on big opportunities. Despite being a relatively young company, Helsing has already been selected for multiple significant government contracts.

We actively encourage healthy, proactive, and diverse debate internally about what we do and how we choose to do it. Teams and individual engineers are trusted (and encouraged) to practise responsible autonomy and critical thinking, and to focus on outcomes, not conformity. At Helsing you will have a say in how we (and you!) work, the opportunity to engage on what does and doesn’t work, and to take ownership of aspects of our culture that you care deeply about.
