POSITION TITLE Mechanical Engineer Intern

LOCATION New Orleans, LA

MANAGER Systems Design Manager

POSITION TYPE Full Time / Non-Exempt / Internship

COMPENSATION $18.58 per hour

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Work closely with the SWBS Lead to develop, integrate, and test the completed designs.

Assist the SWBS Lead with analysis and design tasks within schedule and budget.

Support the transition to production and oversees the design of agreed to changes to the configuration baseline.

Assist the SWBS Section Lead with completing scope of work within an assigned SWBS section.

Create content for presentations to US Coast Guard (USCG) customer.

Meet daily with assigned SWBS Section Lead to escalate roadblocks in order to have the barriers removed.

Analyse fuel, HVAC, steering, hydraulic, and propulsion systems to determine size requirements, power requirements, performance curves, and associated losses.

Perform hand calculations and FEA on structural components/assemblies to verify working stresses are below ultimate, yield, and endurance allowable.

Establish functional and acceptance test plans for system designs.

Ensure that all work is performed in accordance with the specifications, drawings, and terms of the contract including ABS standards within assigned SWBS section.

Partner with Weight Manager to monitor and control the weight of the systems to meet design targets.

Creator and reviewer of Engineering Change Notifications to formally release design data.

Initiates Engineering Change Requests when improvements or errors are identified.

System life-cycle activities – including System Requirements Review (SRR), System Design Review (SDR), Preliminary Design Review (PDR) and Detailed/Critical Design Review (DDR/CDR).

Development of engineering deliverables in accordance with engineering processes, ensuring safe, fit for purpose engineering deliverables, and presenting material associated with the above life-cycle reviews.

Coordinate with sub-contractors and vendors to receive inputs to design activities.

Develop ShipConstructor 3D models and associated 2D drawings/schematics in accordance with company, industry, and project standards.

Release drawings into Product Life Cycle Management system following company workflow.

Create engineering reports to show compliance with project requirements based on design, test, analysis, and similarity.

Partner with quality to troubleshoot installation issues, determine root cause, and recommend solutions.

Create product illustrated parts diagrams and write product manuals.

Contribute to the continuous improvement of the department by creating work instructions for best practices.

Closely managed and tasks are limited in complexity.

QUALIFICATIONS & ATTRIBUTES

ESSENTIAL

Pursuing Bachelors of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering

Automation - MS Office, Project, and Access.

CAD – ShipConstructor, AutoCAD.

Time Management - Managing one's own time. Ensuring that all aspects of the program are met on and according to schedule.

Judgment and Decision Making - Considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one.

Mathematics - Using mathematics to solve problems and possess analytical skills.

Writing & Speaking - Communicating effectively in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience. Talking to others to convey information effectively.

Compliance – Electrical systems of steel and aluminium hulls to ABS and ABYC standards.

Oral & Written Comprehension & Expression - Candidate must have excellent communication, teamwork, leadership, conflict management, and critical thinking skills.

Autonomy - The ability to work unsupervised efficiently and effectively.

Experience within marine industry

WORKING CONDITIONS

Position requires use of computer, telephones, and other office equipment, reading, writing, standing, sitting, walking, repetitive motions, bending, climbing, listening, and hearing ability and visual acuity.

Position occasionally requires ability to work in a manufacturing environment and boats from the beginning of production through the sea trails. This includes mobility to work in and around incomplete aluminium hull structures.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to stand, stoop, kneel, climb, crouch, talk and hear.

Employees must regularly lift and or move up to 25 pounds and frequently lift and or move more than 50 pounds.

RELATIONSHIPS

This role requires a good relationship with the individuals and teams across the Production and Project delivery organizations to ensure Birdon achieves the safe completion of the agreed work, in the time required.
