Engine Shop Service Technician - Big Bore Components Assembly

Holt CAT is the largest Caterpillar dealership of heavy equipment in the United States. We have a full-time, 2nd shift Engine Technician - Shop position available at our San Antonio, Texas with our Power Systems Division located at 5665 SE Loop 410 San Antonio, TX. The hours of the position are Monday-Friday, 3 pm to 12 am, and occasionally on weekends. This mechanic position is responsible for big bore engine assembly providing high-quality teardown, inspection, and repairs of diesel engines (natural gas) in a shop environment, responding to customer needs in a positive, caring, and timely manner, and ensuring maximum value for work performed.

Education and Experience:

At least two years of diesel-powered heavy equipment engine repair experience preferred

Ability to troubleshoot and perform complex repairs such as teardown, inspection, and repairs of diesel engines (natural gas) in a shop environment

Ability and knowledge to read/use schematics and diagrams experience is preferred

High school diploma or equivalent preferred

Graduation from a diesel technology program preferred

Additional Requirements:

Must have all required mechanic hand and pneumatic tools (metric/standard)

Essential Functions:

Troubleshoots and diagnoses equipment malfunctions and failures

Disassembles and assembles machine components to manufacturer’s specifications through the use of hand tools, pneumatic tools, and any specialized tooling

Rebuilds, repairs, reconditions and maintains equipment and components

Demonstrates good customer relations and support; communicates customer needs to shop management

Plans and controls cost of repair jobs

Completes parts orders and identifies parts for return

Mentors and helps train other technicians

Maintains all equipment and work areas – keeps in good, clean, and orderly condition

Works safely at all times and adheres to all applicable safety policies; complies with all company policies, procedures, and standards

Works overtime as required by workload and customers’ needs

Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; e.g., ProTech Technician Training Paths

Performs other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance

Demonstrates proficiency with current computer software, related hardware, and machine electronic systems

Quality control analysis skills - Conducting tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance and communicate findings

Operation and control skills - Controlling operations of equipment or systems

Equipment selection skills - Determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job

Ability to operate a forklift and an overhead crane

The ability to quickly and repeatedly operate the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions

Ability to operate hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, and equipment used in mechanical repair

The ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble very small objects

The ability to read, write, and understand information

The ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to move objects, and use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue

Frequently moves materials or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds

Constant movement and use of limbs; this position requires good manual dexterity, coordination, and stamina

Ascends/descends with gradual or continuous progress by oneself, using both hands and feet, and climbs up and down ladders and/or equipment

Be able to maneuver safely and work underneath equipment

Routinely reacts to visual, auditory, and other signals, including alarms and instructions, and is required to visually inspect work
