Position Focus:

The laboratories study basic immunology using a wide range of methods in biochemistry, molecular and cellular biology, and whole organism developmental biology. We seek a part-time Research Assistant who is eager to learn and who will contribute to our collaborative research through technical, the care and maintenance of our mouse colonies, including tagging and clipping, tissue sample processing, genotyping, and keeping appropriate records.

Responsibilities include technical tasks with lab equipment, molecular biology, executing precise protocols for our research goals, animal care, data input, and lab upkeep. Breed, care, and provide husbandry support for 30+ mouse strains. Handle animals in accordance with institutional, local and Federal regulations. Collect and genotype tissue samples using PCR and electrophoresis. Update genotype records & database. Prepare scientific solutions/buffers, assist in designing, developing, and modifying research experiments and procedures.

Essential Duties

1. Researches and collects data through complex laboratory/ scientific experiments, techniques, and procedures; library research; structured interviews; or through other means for designated research assignments. 2. Records and compiles information related to research data. Codes data accordingly to research specifications. Uses a computer terminal to input and retrieve data and to generate reports. Processes and summarizes data using scientific or statistical techniques. 3. Assists in data interpretation and analyses. Reports on status of research activities. Sets up, operates and maintains laboratory equipment and apparatus. 4. Formulates and prepares scientific solutions and media. Recruits study participants. Orders and maintains inventory of supplies. 5. May assist in designing, developing, and modifying research experiments, procedures, or survey instruments. May oversee and instruct research staff. 6. Performs additional functions incidental to research activities.

Required Education and Experience

Six years of related work experience, four of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and high school level education; or four years of related work experience and an Associate's degree; or little or no work experience and a Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Demonstrated proficiency with basic molecular biology techniques. Proven experience with PCR, DNA extraction and electrophoresis; determining the genotype of progeny.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Basic knowledge of animal handling and tissue collection, working with mouse colonies, husbandry and breeding. Ability to keep impeccable records of mice in colony, DNA samples and genotyping results. Handle animals in accordance with institutional, local and Federal regulations.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Ability to perform additional functions and experiments related to research activities of the laboratory, with opportunity to learn new experimental methods and aspects of experimental design and data interpretation.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Ability to understand Basic Concepts of Preparing Solutions, buffers, and reagents.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Basic Computer Skills.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Associate degree in biological sciences and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. 1-2 years of experience as a lab technician or similar position in a research lab.
