The Director of Laboratory Services is responsible for planning, organizing, directing, coordinating, managing and professionally communicating in all operational aspects of laboratory services. Works with administration, medical staff, other departments to ensure high quality of service in compliance with all state, federal and regulatory agencies rules and regulations.

Your Everyday

Managing:

Compares performance of the department to established standards. Implements corrective action as necessary to ensure that the planned goals and objectives of the department are achieved.

Maintains optimal, cost-effective delivery of services in accordance with departmental standards of quality, productivity and performance.

Ensures compliance with regulatory and accrediting agencies.

Ensures the procedures and methods performed are appropriate and cost effective, scientifically and technically accurate and are performed according to departmental protocol.

Develops a system for the review and update of all procedure manuals/policies.

Maintains appropriate documentation and manuals. Reviews and revises manuals as necessary.

Maintains and monitors a comprehensive quality control and preventative maintenance program. Performs or recommends corrective action as appropriate.

Resolves technical and administrative problems within the department.

Monitors compliance with the budgets and makes adjustments as necessary.

Monitors productivity indicators and takes action as appropriate.

Manages space and equipment for the effective functioning of the department.

Monitors maintenance of the department and ensure repairs are performed as appropriate.

Organizing:

Structures activities and behavior within the department to achieve the goals and objectives of the department and the institution.

Establishes and maintains a comprehensive quality control program to ensure accuracy and validity of results. Also establishes and maintains a maintenance program to ensure equipment and instruments are in good working order.

Develops and maintains a materials management system to ensure adequate inventory of supplies.

Directing:

Coordinates the activities of employees through supervising, delegating, motivating and effective communication.

Provides for the orientation of new personnel. Provides for the technical orientation and instruction of new personnel in procedures, equipment, instrumentation, safety and organization of work.

Recommends employment, transfer, promotion or termination of personnel in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.

Coordinating:

Synchronizes efforts, energy and resources of the department with those of other departments to facilitate and effective overall delivery of health care to the patients.

Consults with physicians and/or nursing staff on laboratory findings, schedules and availability of procedures or test results.

Investigates new technologies and recommends implementation of those technologies which provide better service to the laboratory clients.

Coordinates the function of the department with other departments for the overall improvement of the organization.

Participates on committees and special function groups to evaluate and recommend action to improve the overall effectiveness of health care delivery within the organization.

Planning:

Formulates short- and long-range departmental goals which are consistent with the hospital goals and objectives. Analyzes overall environment to determine current department status and goals. Anticipates future goals and potential problems and implements a comprehensive action plan to achieve and maintain those goals.

Sets priorities, assesses responsibilities and establishes timetables for completion of goals and objectives.

Prepares budget proposals and justifications for services, equipment, space and personnel.

Professionalism:

Maintains professional image and demeanor in all activities.

Participates in appropriate professional societies and organizations

Participates in continuing education in technical and managerial areas.

The Must-Haves

Minimum:

EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS

5 years of progressive supervisory, management or administrative work in a health care or clinical laboratory setting.

EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree.

Fulfillment of the educational requirements necessary for qualification to sit for a Louisiana State Board of Clinical Pathologists’ approved Clinical Laboratory Sciences national certification examination.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

Clinical Laboratory Scientist (Generalist or Specialist) issued by the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners.
