JOB Summary

Supervises and manages the operations of multiple drilling rigs and rig personnel, including safety and human resource procedures and practices, financial results and all facets of rig and drilling operations. Assists management in meeting the budgetary, operational, safety, and human resource goals and objectives of the district.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Develops and ensures a safe work place for all drilling operations. Immediately reports to district and/or division management any workplace/rig/personnel issues which cause, or may cause, unsafe or potentially unsafe working conditions.

2. Implements, monitors and evaluates all safety/HR programs and makes recommendations for continuous improvements. Ensures that Rig Managers implement and support all safety/HR programs and procedures to rig crews in methods that provide optimal retention and support.

3. Directs rig operations within terms of the drilling contract.

4. Maintains rigs and rig components at the highest level of operational efficiency achievable within budget and economic considerations. Coordinates in-house and third party maintenance services.

5. Analyzes daily rig costs and initiates or recommends changes and improvements to meet budgets and increase margins.

6. Evaluates efficiency of rig operations including, drilling rates, downtime, trip time, downhole problems, mud problems and well control. Implements changes in rig operations as required in coordination with operator and/or district/division/corporate management.

7. Inspects new locations to insure they are built to contract specifications.

8. Monitors morning reports and daily rig operations and takes action as required for efficient drilling and rig operations. Immediately reports to district management any significant events.

9. Recommends and approves (within authority and budget guidelines) repairs, replacement and maintenance of equipment on assigned rigs.

10. Approves recommended expenditures from Rig Managers and initiates AFE’s as required. Monitors spending against AFE’s and ensures spending levels remain within the budget limits for each AFE.

11. Assists in annual budget planning for assigned rigs.

12. Supervises rig moves, movement of all equipment for assigned rigs. Makes agreements with land owners for permission to stack rigs on their property when required. Submits check requests for stacked rig costs.

13. Assists in marketing assigned rigs, establishes and maintains good relations and communications with operators.

14. Provides technical assistance and onsite supervision when needed for customer relations in areas of rig operations.

15. Sets goals and standards which are aligned with the district/division/corporate goals and standards for assigned rigs and assists Rig Managers in meeting those standards.

16. Develops methods for continuous improvement in all areas including safety, leadership, cost reduction, operational efficiency, planning and management of assigned rigs.

17. Responsible for the development and training of rig crews. Assigns and schedules Rig Managers, drillers and rig crews. Evaluates and counsels Rig Managers and rig crews for optimal performance in all areas including safety, human resources, operations and customer relations.

18. Assists other divisions and districts as needed with equipment and tubular needs.

19. Other duties and projects as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Five to ten years experience in drilling operations, including supervisory responsibilities.

The ability to prioritize multiple operational problems and implement solutions quickly

and economically.

Demonstrated communication skills for interaction at all levels of the organization and externally

with customers and third party vendors.

Must understand and apply professional standards and presentation internally and externally.

A high school graduate with some college and/or relevant experience considered. Industry technical schools a plus.
