Job Title: Assistant/Associate Editor Geography (Americas, British Isles, Australasia

Reports to: Assistant Managing Editor

Location: Chicagoland/Hybrid (Can be remote)

Encyclopaedia Britannica has an opening in its Core Editorial department for the position of an Assistant/Associate Editor for Geography of the Americas, the British Isles, and Australasia. Being an editor at Britannica means working in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment that values the trustworthiness of its content more than anything else. The successful candidate will thrive in and add to this setting. The successful candidate will also be committed to producing content that is clear, fair, accurate, and relevant.

Responsibilities include:

Planning—in partnership with colleagues, contributors, and advisers—and implementation of coverage of select countries of the Americas, the British Isles, and Australasia. This includes articles on cities and administrative units, historical events, and individuals from those countries.

Editing, writing, and acquiring new articles that reflect current developments in these subject areas, revising existing articles, as well as creating other types of content for Britannica.com.

Collaborating with media editors and illustrators on the acquisition and production of images, videos, and other media.

In addition to boundless curiosity, the ideal candidate has:

Significant writing and editing experience.

One of the following:

M.A. or Ph.D. in American Studies, Latin American Studies, British Studies, or related fields

M.A. or Ph.D. in history or geography with a focus on the Americas, the British Isles, or Australasia

B.A. and professional experience and contacts in any of these fields

Written, verbal, or reading fluency in Latin American Spanish and/or Brazilian Portuguese is highly desirable.

Strong visual literacy and a track record in using visual materials (photographs, maps, interactives, video, etc.) as an integral part of storytelling.

Strong fluency in, or the ability to learn quickly: Google Workspace; Google Analytics and similar tools; productivity software; HTML and XML literacy.
